Australian Open : Serena Williams beats Sharapova

Serena-SharapovaTVC E, SPORTS – Reigning champion, Serena Williams beat Maria Sharapova for the 18th time in a row to reach the Australian Open semi-finals on Tuesday.

The American who is bidding for a 22nd Grand Slam title, saw off fifth seed Sharapova 6-4, 6-1 at Melbourne Park.

It is 12 years since Williams lost to the Russian, and the world number one moves on to face fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the semi finals.

Radwanska advanced to her second Australian Open semi-final after beating Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain 6-1, 6-3.

In the men’s draw, defending champion Novak Djokovic stormed to a 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 victory over seventh seed Kei Nishikori to set up a semi-final clash with Roger Federer.

Djokovic fired a cross-court backhand winner to close out the match and will make his sixth appearance in the last four at Melbourne Park.

17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer had earlier advanced to his 12th Australian Open semi-final with a 7-6,  6-2,  6-4 victory over sixth seed Tomas Berdych.

The Swiss faces world number one Novak on Thursday.
