TVC E. An Olympic athlete has been arrested for attempting to sexually assault a housekeeper in the Olympic Village, according to reports.
Jonas Junius of Namibia has become the second athlete to be arrested on suspicion of sexual assault at the Games currently taking place in Brazil.
The 22-year-old, who was arrested on Sunday (Aug 7), is accused of grabbing a housekeeper, attempting to kiss her before offering her money in exchange for sex.
Last week, Moroccan boxer Hassan Saada was arrested by police after allegedly assaulting two female cleaners and as a result has been jailed for 15 days, pending an investigation, media reports said.
Junius was selected to be Namibia’s flag-bearer at the opening ceremony.
Brazilian authorities arrested Junius on attempted rape charges, and he will be transferred to a maximum security prison in the Rio de Janeiro neighborhood of Bangu, where he will await trial, according to local reports.
Detective Rodrigo Amorim of Rio’s Police said: “I can confirm that a Namibian athlete named Jonas Junius was arrested this morning on suspicion of attempted rape of a female in the Olympic Village.
He was scheduled to fight France’s Hassan Amzile in the men’s light welter round of 32 on Thursday (Aug 11).
