2017 Oscars: 85 Countries compete for foreign language film nominations

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences says 85 countries have submitted films for consideration in the  Foreign Language 89th Oscar category.

The countries include “Algeria,” “Egypt,” “Lebanon,” with Yemen as a first-time entrant.

The Academy will curtail the list to a shortlist which will be announced alongside other Oscar nominations on January 24, 2017 at Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

The competitive Foreign Language Film category was introduced in 1956 for the 29th Academy Awards.

In celebration of its 60th anniversary, the Academy has created a complete playlist of acceptance speeches and a poster gallery of all the Foreign Language Film Oscar® winners.

The 89th Oscars will be held February 26, 2017, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywoo
