Controversies continue to trail planned Rivers State re-run elections

The 2015 general elections were held on March 28th and April 11 that year.
Most of the 36 states of the country have since moved on with their Governors, state and federal legislators settled down to the business of governance and law making.

But this not the case in Rivers State.  It is almost 2 years since the 2015 polls but there are still inconclusive elections in the state.

It’s been 18 months and counting since the 2015 general election and still several of the 32-seat state house of assembly remain vacant.

Only 5 out of the state’s 13 federal constituencies are represented in the National Assembly while none of the 3 senatorial districts is represented.

No thanks to appeal court judgments that ordered fresh polls.

However for one reason or the other INEC has been unable to either schedule, hold or conclude these elections.

The election of March the 19th this year was inconclusive, the next round couldn’t also hold as planned last July. That also scheduled for  October by the commission failed.

More than 20 political parties are expected to participate in the election, but if it eventually hold, the contest would be between the All
Progressives Congress, APC and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

While both the APC and PDP condemned the delay, they are in another breathe suspecting each other of master minding it.  Another issue said to be likely responsible for the latest delay is the inability of the electoral umpire to clear the air on the status of the April rerun election in Tai Local Government Area of the state.

Also the argument continues as to how safe the State is for the elections.

While the waiting game continues, one unmistakable fact remains that for the first time in Rivers political history the state is not adequately represented at  the National Assembly.
