Nigeria’s Falconets bounces back in victory over Canada

Nigeria’s Falconets bounced back after a disappointing opening day loss to clinch a 3-1 victory over Canada in the FIFA U20 women’s world cup in Papau New Guinea.

Goals from Chinaza Uchendu, Joy Bokiri and Chinwendu Ihezuo were all the Africans needed to nick past the Canucks despite going down in the opening minutes of the game.

The Falconets were shocked by a 6-0 loss to Japan in their opening Group B fixture last Sunday, but they bounced back after their victory over Canada.

Gabrielle Carl made the breakthrough for Canada 15 minutes into the first half before Uchendu’s penalty in the closing stages of the first half when Bianca St Georges was penalised for handling the ball inside the area.

Bokiri put the Falconets ahead immediately after the restart of the second half before Ihezuo sealed the win after capitalising on a mistake by goalkeeper Foster to slot into an empty goal.

Nigeria face leaders Spain in their last Group B encounter, while  Canada next meet Japan on 20 November.
