100 Political Parties May Contest In 2019 General Election

100 political parties may participate in the 2019 general election, if 60 political associations, currently seeking to certification as political parties from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), meet the required standards.

Already, there are 40 registered political parties in Nigeria.

The Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, yesterday disclosed that a fresh 60 political associations have applied to the commission to be registered as political parties in the country.

He disclosed this at a Capacity Development Workshop organised by the electoral commission for the press corps which ended on Saturday in Abuja.

A recent court order had mandated the registration of 10 political parties by bring the number of registered parties in Nigeria to 40.

However, Oyekanmi said that the fresh applications were at various levels of processing by the commission.
