China to ban sales of fuel-powered vehicles

China has said it will set a deadline for car manufacturers to stop selling fossil-fuel-powered vehicles in the country, and switch to electric cars.

Xin Guobin, the vice minister of industry and information technology, has said the Chinese government is working with regulators to figure out a timetable to end not just the production but also sales of fuel-powered vehicles, Bloomberg reports.

China will be the biggest market and the third country, after UK and France, to start plans of phasing out fuel-powered cars.

The Chinese government had previously vowed to limit its carbon emissions by 2030, although, in a market as big as China, the ban on fuel-powered cars will probably not be fully implemented by 2040.
