WAFU: Despite losing 4-1, Super Eagles get N24million

The home-based Super Eagles received $65,000 (about N24million), despite losing 4-1 to Ghana, in the final of this year’s West African Football Union (WAFU) Cup.

The Black Stars were paid the ultimate star prize of $100,000 (about N36million) offered by FOX Sports, sponsors of the two-week WAFU Cup tournament.

A break down of the prize money outlay, shows that the first place prize was $100,000 while the runners-up prize was $50,000.

Niger Republic that defeated Benin Republic 2-1 got the third-placed prize of $25,000. The Squirrels of Benin got $10,000 as the fourth place finished team.

In addition to the prizes for the final and the losers’ final, all teams got participation fees of $15,000 each.

The four semi-final losing teams got $10,000 each, while the four second-round losers were consoled with $5,000 each.
