Rivers United apologise to Governor Wike for protesting unpaid wages

Rivers United players have apologised to Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, following their protest on Tuesday over the payment of their sign-on fees for the 2014/2015 season.

Captain of the team, Austin Festus, told Completesports that they have apologised to Wike for their action, after he promised to ensure the payment of the sign-on fees.

The governor addressed us personally at the government house and he promised to ensure we get the money as soon as possible.

He has already approved the payment of the money and we apologised to him for not using a more subtle way of resolving the issue,” Festus said.

Pictures of the players discussing with Wike, while one of them prostrated before the Governor, went viral yesterday.

The club’s media officer, Sammy Wejinya, also corroborated Festus’ views in a statement he released earlier on Tuesday.

This morning, players of Rivers United FC went to the Rivers State Government House to press home demands for the payment of sign on fees for the 2014/15 football season,” Wenjiya wrote.

It should be noted that these monies were owed by the previous administration, before the merger, and during the days of Sharks and Dolphins FC.
