Sex-for-marks: Court denies OAU lecturer bail

Embattled OAU lecturer, Professor Richard Akindele, who was charged with demanding sex to pass his student, Monica Osagie, was denied bail by a Federal High Court in Osogbo on Tuesday.

ICPC Senior Legal Officer, Mr Kehinde Adetoye had earlier asked the court to deny the defendant bail on grounds that he will not appear for his trial when released. Vanguard reported that the move was backed by the defendant’s failure to show up at the ICPC office in Abuja after a written agreement to honour any invitation extended to him, particularly on his return from abroad on a medical trip.

Ruling on the case, Justice Maureen Onyetenu who ordered Akindele to be remanded in Ilesa Prison until Dec. 17, ordered the prosecution counsel from the ICPC to produce video evidence of the lecturer and his student having fun.

In a statement few weeks ago, the ICPC said Akindele would be arraigned on three charges, for acting contrary to sections 8(1)(a)(ii), and 18 (d) under the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.

“That you, professor Akindele, on or about the 16th day of September, 2017 at Ile-Ife did corruptly ask for sexual benefits for yourself from Ms. Monica Osagie on account of favour to be afterwards shown to her by you in the discharge of your official duties as a lecturer in the Department of Management and Accounting, Obafemi Awolowo University, to wit; altering her academic grades in the course with code MBA 632- Research Method from fail to pass; and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 8(1)(a)(ii) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act,” one of the charges read.
