Popular Nigerian comedian Ayo Makun, known by his stage name as AY, has taken to social media to appeal to Nigerians to forgive disqualified Big Brother Naija housemate, Tacha, for her behavior while she was in the house. The comedian, who shared a video of an elderly woman praying for Tacha on his Instagram page, noted that he has been watching ever since she started her journey to become better. He expressed that this is a time for her to surround herself with positive people. He asked Nigerians who still feel infuriated by her behavior to please forgive her actions in the house.

AY called on Nigerians to encourage Tacha, adding that forgiveness is the best form of love. He also noted that inner peace can be reached only when people practice forgiveness.

Tacha replied to his post, saying she had an amazing time with the grandma who prayed for her. She said: “Amen Amen Amen I had an amazing time with Grandma yesterday Thank you”

In a recent interview with Pulse, AY gave more insights on what he means.

“The major challenge is access to funds. We still don’t have access to funds but people who are doing what they are doing in Nollywood now are individuals who strongly believe in moving Nollywood forward and at the same time trying to get involved in the business to make money for themselves,” he said.

“Access to funding is a major challenge, the more we have people who believe in the industry getting involved in terms of sponsorship, participation and investment, trust me, we would be giving Hollywood a pretty good run for their money. But for now, that is the major challenge but so far so good, if I want to rate Nollywood, I would be doing that from the point of view of the individuals, who are in there doing what they know how to do best. We are there, we are climbing but it can be better.” AY added.

AY also revealed to Pulse how he source funds for his movies. He said explained that he tries to get one or two investors to fund some of his movies.

He said, “I play with my own funds and once or twice, try to get one or two investors involved, I mean not within the corporate circle but individuals who also believe in the business and we just rock and roll. It could be better if we have the support of either the government or corporate sector, it’s just the question of belief and understanding to close up the gaps.”

“Government needs to be involved, it’s one direction that has been downplayed, maybe because before now, some people moved that motion and forwarded it to the government but did that from a selfish point of view like let me go there, grab what I can and move. People in government at that time stopped taking us seriously and when they see you as a mediocre, it becomes a child’s play.” 

AY told Pulse in an exclusive chat that film-making has been good to his brand as an entertainer and he said his projections for the year 2019 calendar include making another film.

Eko Comedy Festival, so named because of its Lagos origin, will hold in May of 2017, as part of what organisers, First Class Entertainment, say is a timely intervention to restructure the comedy industry, while preparing the market for a future that can see comedy contribute remarkable to Nigeria and Africa’s GDP.

‘Our industry has indeed come of age, thriving through many generations and genres’, says founder Tunde Adewale. ‘ECOFEST is a celebration of the Nigerian comedy industry, and we’re glad that our debut coincides with the 50th anniversary of our host state, Lagos.’

In a chat with newsmen,  pioneer stand-up comedian Ali Baba, said the industry is now estimated to be worth around 1 billion naira, as of December 2016.

It is believed that the forthcoming comedy festival will boost the fortunes of the industry.

He has also started two mentorship and training programmes. And while 22 actors were selected for a first phase, entries are still being allowed for upcoming comedians in the competition tagged ‘Young and Funny.’

Young comedians of African descent between the ages of 18 and 35 are to send a one-man skit or monologue to the Youtube channel of RMD The Actor. And entries with the most likes proceed to the next phase of the competition.

Winners among other things get the Young and Funny page platform on the RMDTheActor Website to post their skits, a constant repost of his / her videos on RMD’s social media accounts, a personal introduction by Richard Mofe-Damijo to the King of Comedy AliBaba and a possible feature on one of AliBaba’s comedy shows and also introduction and recommendation to other top Nigerian comedians like AY, Teju Babyface and others.
