A High Court sitting in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, has sentenced gospel singer Oluwatimileyin Ajayi to death by hanging for the murder of his 24-year-old girlfriend, Salome Adaidu. The tragic incident occurred in Papaladna village, located in the Karshi Development Area of the state.

Justice Simeon Aboki, who presided over the case, delivered the judgment after finding that the prosecution had successfully proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. According to the court, the evidence presented clearly showed that Ajayi was responsible for the death of the young woman, who had visited him at his residence.

During the trial, Ajayi attempted to defend himself by claiming he became unconscious after spending time with the deceased and was not in a proper state of mind when he wrote his confessional statement. However, Justice Aboki dismissed this claim, stating it lacked merit and could not be substantiated.

The case has drawn public attention due to the nature of the crime and the involvement of a known gospel musician. The verdict marks a significant conclusion to a case that has highlighted issues around gender-based violence and justice delivery in Nigeria.

The court’s ruling serves as a stern warning and a reminder of the weight of consequences attached to violent crimes, especially within intimate relationships.

On tuesday, a Hig Court in Ikeja sentenced a 36-year-old woman, Stella Gilbert, to death for stabbing her neighbour, Mrs Stella Godwin, to death during a fight at their residence in Ajegunle, Lagos.

The woman stabbed the deceased on the chest and arm with a knife during a fight at their face-me-i-face-you apartment, on who would inherit their former neighbour’s bench. Murder contravenes Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos 2011 and is punishable with death by hanging.

Justice Raliatu Adebiyi sentenced Gilbert after dismissing her claim of self defence.
The judge held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

“The defendant in this case used a knife on the deceased; by any standard, a knife is a lethal weapon. The evidence of PW2 (Prosecution Witness 2), the cousin of PW1 (the deceased’s husband), and that of PW3, the female police officer, was that the deceased was stabbed on the chest. The coroner’s report tendered in evidence by PW4 confirmed that the deceased was stabbed on the chest. The chest is where the heart is; the defendant, by stabbing the deceased on the chest, a very fragile part of the body, clearly intended to cause the most harm to her. The death of the deceased occurred as a result of grievous injury caused by the defendant. The defendant is culpable of the offence of murder,” she said.

The judge remarked that a lot of cases in courts were caused by animosity and violence due to individuals living in close proximity in the metropolis. She said that the situation called for improvement in social housing in Lagos State.

“From the evidence, the fight took place in a room; though no evidence was given about the size of the room, it could not have been a very large room. The evidence was that the deceased and the defendant lived in a house consisting of rooms occupied by families popularly called ‘face-me-I-face-you’. It is worrisome that the level of violence, unnecessary animosity and death, which occur among our citizens as a result of living together in close proximity without sufficient personal space and boundaries, remain unabated. There is clearly a need to improve social housing and living conditions. The court hopes that this message will be conveyed to the necessary authorities through prosecutors who have the responsibility to prosecute these cases and should be able to provide vital statistics,” she urged.

Following the conviction of the Gilbert, her counsel, Mr Y. E. Yusuf, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy.

“The defendant has been in detention for six years; during that time, she lost both parents and her brother. She is in her late 30s and unmarried, she has gone through a lot. She was not harbouring the intent to murder when the incident occurred. I want my lord to temper justice with mercy and refrain from giving the defendant the maximum sentence,” Yusuf urged.

However, the judge passed death sentence on Gilbert.

“The defendant, Stella Gilbert, is hereby sentenced to death. May God that grants life have mercy on your soul,” she said.

On hearing the sentence, Gilbert collapsed on the dock. Wailing loudly, she said:

“Please ma, temper justice with mercy, why me oh, only me…”

In her tears, she was led out of the courtroom and had to be carried by a mobile policeman and a prison warden out of the court complex to avoid disruption of proceedings in other courtrooms due to the commotion.

According to the state counsel, Mrs O. R. Ahmed-Muili, the convict murdered Godwin, mother of three, on June 22, 2013, at No. 59, Ojora St., Ajegunle, Lagos.

Following the death sentence announcement by the court on Rev. Chukwuemeka Ezeugo porpularly known as Rev King, the Ndigbo Cultural Society of Nigeria (NCSN) has called on the Federal Government not to be quick in carrying out the death sentence passed on Rev. Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, the General Overseer of Christian Praying Assembly, by the Supreme Court on Friday.

Leader of the group, Chief Udo Udeogaranya, made the appeal after the Supreme Court threw out Rev King’s appeal against the death sentence passed on him in 2007 by a Lagos High Court presided over by Justice Joseph Oyewole.According to Udeogaranya, the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government should “commute the sentence and grant him pardon as Nigeria stands to gain nothing by shedding blood.”

“This plea is premised on the ground that many Nigerians still hold Rev. Ezeugo as their spiritual leader even in various prisons and that the initial trial in Lagos as purportedly put forward by his lawyer Mr. Olalekan Ojo and published by national dailies was a miscarriage of justice in which the lawyer made certain points that demanded a second thought.”

“Ojo argued that his client did not commit the crime and was not at the scene of the incident. He insisted that the deceased, Ann Uzoh, had in two statements she made after the incident and before her death, stated that she got burnt in a generator accident and that the cleric was not responsible for her injuries. “

“Ojo said the Investigating Police Officer, IPO, had tendered statements which stated that Ezeugo was not responsible for the burns that led to Uzoh’s death. He alleged that the trial Judge refused to admit in evidence, the statements he said exonerated Ezeugo of the crime.

“The lawyer further contended had those ‘vital exhibits’ been admitted rather than expunged by the trial judge, they would have operated to cast serious doubt on the case of the prosecution. He maintained that Justice Oyewole’s refusal to admit the exhibits in evidence ‘occasioned a great miscarriage of justice’ against his client.”
