Ogbogonogo Market in the Asaba metropolis was said to have been shut down based on the directive of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa because of the presidential campaign rally of the Peoples Democratic Party which was held in the state on Tuesday.

Some traders complained bitterly and counted their losses as a result of the visit of the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to the state.

They described the attitude of the state government towards the citizens’ welfare as insensitive.

“Markets were shut down on Tuesday because of the party’s campaign, which is why Okowa did not declare a public holiday for civil servants. The workers are there to work for him, and he closed our only source of income.

“Don’t you know that there are people who go hungry if the market does not open for a day?” Mordi a trader lamented.

Atiku, however, said that the team was in Delta to thank the state rather than to campaign when addressing party supporters at the rally’s location, the Stephen Keshi Stadium.

He said, “We are not in Delta State to campaign; we are in the state to show our gratitude. Since 1999, Delta has never failed our party; that is why I chose my running mate, Okowa, from here.

“In my policy document, education is well captured, and as far as the federal government is concerned, there will be no ASSU strike again if I am elected president. The APC government has disunited Nigeria, and we are coming to unite the country. Economy and security will be given adequate attention.”

The former minister of state for education Kenneth Gbagi, who is angling to become governor of Delta State in 2023 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, has detained and charged four of his hotel staff members with stealing N5,000.

Gbagi detained the four employees after stripping them naked and taking photos of them within the establishment before turning them over to the police.

According to reports the four employees—a male and three females—were dehumanized before being transported to the Ebrumede Police Station and placed under remand.

A hotel employee disclosed that the former minister had detained some of his coworkers for allegedly stealing the specified sum.

He said, “My boss, former Minister of State for Education and owner of Signatious Hotel, Chief Kenneth Gbagi, arrested four of my colleagues working for him over the stealing of N5,000 from the hotel when actually the N5,000 was given as a gift to them by a guest because of their good behaviour.”

While giving the names of the arrested colleagues as Gloria Oguzie, Victor Ephraim, Rosslyn Okiemute and Achibong Precious, the source said,

“Before they were arrested by the police on Friday last week at the hotel, the four staff were stripped naked while they were photographed in the presence of the police.

“We learnt that the dehumanising treatment was instructed by our boss.”

It was also discovered that the hotel management had unlawfully taken money from the four employees’ bank accounts using their ATM cards before the police arrived with a waiting van to pick them up.

After being held for four days, the four employees were charged in Effurun before a magistrate court.

In a five-count charge, the police accused the suspects of conniving among themselves to steal monies ranging from N156,000, N110,000, N5,000 and N2,000 owned by Signatious Hotel and committed an offence punishable under section 516 and 390 (9), of the criminal code Law Cap21C Vol.1 Law of Delta State.

According to what has been learned, certain anti-corruption and human rights activists decided to take up the issue, and as a result, the four employees were given bail on Monday.

In a written statement to the media on Thursday, the state police command’s spokesman, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed that three pregnant women had been rescued from the den while two suspects, Promise Ejogu, 25, and Aruna Sulieman, 29, had been detained.

Bright Edafe, Delta police spokesperson, in a statement on Thursday, said operatives from the state criminal investigation department stormed the place following information received on activities in the area.

He added that three pregnant women were rescued during the operation.

He said,

“Acting on information, on July 10, 2022, at about 7.30pm, operatives of the State Investigation Department stormed a baby factory in Okpanam community, Oshimili North LGA,” the statement reads.

“The operatives rescued three pregnant women and two suspects; Promise Ejogu and Aruna Sulieman were arrested.

“Information gathered by the police revealed that one of the suspects, Promise Ejogu, is a brother to the ring leader of the syndicate.

“The syndicate kept the women and engages them in sexual activities to get them pregnant.”

According to information obtained, one of the accused, Promise Ejogu, is a relative of the syndicate’s ringleader who allegedly participates in sexual activity with these women in order to become pregnant.

The PPRO reported that while efforts are being made to apprehend the remaining syndicate members, the suspects are now being held in prison.

According to reports shared on social media, Ovie who lives in Ughelli, Delta state, stabbed himself repeatedly with a broken bottle and refused to be stopped by concerned observers.

According to the report, as people tried to stop him from inflicting pains on himself, it only made him intensify the act.

Policemen however arrived the scene but on their arrival, the young man used the sharp edge of the broken bottle to slash his throat.

The reason for his action is still unknown, but people are of the opinion that he was probably a Yahoo boy suffering a spiritual problem brought on by the rituals done for the success of his Yahoo scam. Others say he was probably gay and suicidal.
