Earlier, Timi Dakolo in a Press Conference  addressing rape allegations leveled against Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo and the show up of police men at his house in Lagos, Timi said in one of his statements “Our lawyers Falana Falana chambers, representing us.”

The human rights lawyer told The PUNCH on Tuesday that he only intervened when the family expressed fear over their petition. This he said to clarify reports of stepping as the lawyer representing the Dakolos.

Falana said he was contacted after the Dakolos had written their petition.

“They wrote their petition before contacting us. When they met us, they expressed the fear that their petition might not be investigated. This mistake was as a result of the exact similarities in the names of John Abayomi who is an Online Editor with Punch and another John Abayomi Aruleba who is the actual owner of Instablog9ja.

The picture identification mistake from our staff was sadly as a result of the uncanny yet not uncommon similarities in the names of these two individuals.

LIB is happy to set the record straight, take full responsibility for the mix-up as we tender our unreserved apology to John Abayomi of Punch Newspapers for any inconvenience this mistake has caused.

The legal firm Falana and Falana Chambers in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives noted that the decision to investigate Jibrin, who he described as his client, is in contravention of relevant sections of the standing orders of the House.

The letter, he says contravenes order 9 rule 5 of the Standing Order of the House of Representatives.

The rule provides that “Reference shall not be made to any matter on which a judicial decision is pending, in such a way as might, in the Speaker’s opinion, prejudice the interest of parties thereto.”

A civil society organization, Center for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJET) said Falana’s call for the army chief’s sack is like a lawyer interpreting the constitution like a bible.

The senior lawyer had condemned the defense by the Nigerian army that Buratai was able to acquire two property in Dubai through savings made from his salary. Falana described the army’s defense as “a cock and bull story” stating that it was regrettable that the institution is illegally been used to defend the chief of army staff and his corrupt practices.

He had also questioned how the chief of army staff was able to save $1.5 million from his salary as a military officer to procure such property. “How an army general managed to save $1.5 million has not been disclosed to Nigerians, since the General was in charge of procurement for the Nigerian army at the material time, the cock and bull story of the military high command has been called names,” Falana had said. But a statement signed by the executive secretary of CESJET, Isaac Ikpa, said the senior lawyer was selfish to with his comment.

Ikpa said the senior lawyer “unwittingly” fell into the trap of some individuals who are Boko Haram sympathisers. He said: “For a man who mounts stiff defence of clients accused of corruption, Falana’s statement that accused, tried, condemned and sentenced the COAS to a sack in one breadth smacks of double standards and raises questions about the positions he had earlier taken on other national issues.”
Ikpa added that the organization is however not surprised following Falana’s recent call for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to ignore the immunity of a sitting governor without weighing its consequences. “The allegations that the renowned lawyer is putting his governorship ambition in Ekiti state above public interest is finally being proven since those that allocate tickets in the All Progressives Congress (APC) have earlier been fingered in the plot to oust Buratai from his current post,” Ikpa said.

“It is also becoming a certainty, given the intensity of this campaign of calumny that the incumbent COAS is merely a pawn to these people that are desperate to decimate persons they perceive as loyal to President Muhammadu Buhari so that they can fill the resulting vacuum with their own henchmen.

“We are also not surprised that their vituperation came on a day that the military made one of its most decisive strikes against Boko Haram, killing 16 terrorists, capturing two alive and seizing highly sophisticated weapons from the terrorists. “In a curious coincidence, Falana issued his statement on the same day as several non governmental organizations that are known to answer to the APC power block he is sucking up to for the governorship ticket issued similarly worded

The coordination was perfect to the point that there were supporting newspaper editorials. “Falana and his co-travellers have in reality become threats to the civil society movement in Nigeria, Gani Fawehinmi will in no doubt be terribly bitter in his grave that his compatriots have abandoned the core issues of humanity, which he fought for his entire life, and have gone to dine with the devil,” he said.

The group also commended the Falana for acknowledging the feat recorded by troops of the Nigerian military in the fight against Boko Haram.

Falana said this in a paper he presented on Saturday in Abuja at a symposium organised by the Nigerian Labour Congress as part of its activities marking this year’s Workers’ Day.

According to Falana, profligacy remains the order of the day in government circles at all levels.

He said, “With the profligacy in government there is no sign that we are going through tough times.

“Our public officers are paid the highest travelling allowances  or estacode while our legislators are the highest paid in the world.

“After collecting wardrobe, housing and vehicle allowances of billions of Naira the federal legislators have placed orders for the purchase of exotic cars which they approved for themselves.

“The payment of the illegal security votes by the federal, state and local governments has not ceased.”

He said there were still 11 planes in the presidential fleet, over 70 per cent of the budget still goes into “servicing of parasitic bureaucracy” while governors still travel so regularly to Abuja and other places in hired jets.

He added that “no government has reviewed projects that constitute a drain on public treasury” while public officers were still moving around in long convoys.

He also said jobs, which could be handled by civil servants, were still being given out to contractors at skyrocketing prices.
