Like its adult version, International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8, International Day of the Girl Child acknowledges the importance, power, and potential of adolescent girls by encouraging the opening up of more opportunities for them.

At the same time, this day is designated to eliminate gender-based challenges that little girls face around the world, including child marriages, poor learning opportunities, violence, and discrimination.

To eliminate such discriminations Scholaroo has resources for scholarships from around the world for young girls to support their future.

The man identified as Abdulai Abbas and currently in police custody, reportedly connived with his 30-year-old in-law to perpetuate the crime. The girl who spoke to Joy News disclosed that her father ignored her plea to get educated, but tried forcing marriage on her with a man from Niger.

“The marriage should not come on, I am only a child and I want my education.”

Confirming the arrest of the girl’s father, DSP Prince Kodua, the regional office of DOVVSU disclosed that a collaborative effort between police and the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) ended the marriage midway through its three-day ceremony.

“The law clearly states a girl can only marry at the age of 18 thus both families are culpable and they are going to face justice” he said.

According to Kodua, the girl has been given protective shelter while investigations are ongoing. A teacher who pleaded anonymity, told Joy News that child marriages in Abriem are not uncommon.

“Since I came to the town I have seen no less than six of these young girls being given away for marriage and there is a lot I have not seen,” he said.

This she said has prompted her to start the ‘Lagos Girls Football’ which involves Lagos State secondary school tournament.

Although in her words, she was not abused but she realizes that the girl child needs encouragement.

“I was not abused because I started with someone who has passion for football, had other girls and funded it with his money.When you meet the right people, you will reach your goal without being abused. My project is for the girl child. I know a lot of girls that we started together but today, they are else where because there was no opportunity and no one to talk to them or talk to their parents on their behalf. Some of the girls in the Lagos tournament have been chosen for international matches and we have the support of the first lady of Lagos state. When dignitaries are in support of what you do and help you, then you are on the right path.”

She also countered the stereotype believe that female footballers are feminists and don’t get involved in relationships.

“It’s not true, It’s a choice that you make. I can get pregnant if I want and have a baby. I will just take a year or a year and half break and come back to continue football.”

She then added that she is in a relationship.

“I am occupied, I am not free.”
