The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Gudu, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced a former Governor of Plateau State and serving senator, Joshua Dariye, to 14 years’ imprisonment on charges of criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of over N1.16bn belonging to the state.

Justice Adebukola Banjoko ‎in a judgment which took her six and a half hours to read convicted the ex-governor on 15 out the 23 counts preferred against him.

The judge barely a fortnight ago, imposed 14 years’ jail term on ex-Governor of Taraba State, Jolly Nyame, on similar charges.

On Tuesday she sentenced ‎Dariye to two years imprisonment on each of the five counts bordering on criminal misappropriation and 14 years’ jail term on each of the 11 counts of criminal breach of trust.

The judge, however, ruled that all the sentences would run concurrently, implying that the convict would have to spend 14 years in jail.

The punishments imposed on the ex-governor for the two categories of offences of criminal breach of trust and criminal misappropriation are the maximum as provided under sections 315 and 309 of the Penal Code Act, respectively.

The judge threw out eight of the 23 charges on the grounds of either duplicity or lack of sufficient evidence.

‎Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s lawyer, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), had in opposing the defence lawyer’s plea for mercy, urged the court to impose the maximum sentence to serve as deterrence to others.

Jolly Nyame who was Taraba state governor between 1999 and 2007 was being sentenced for his acts of criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of the sum of N1.64bn belonging to the state.

Delivering a judgement that lasted more than four hours on Wednesday, Justice Adebukola Banjoko found the former governor guilty in 27 out of 41 counts he was charged with.
There was no option of fine on any of the counts.

According to the judgement, the former governor was jailed two years for misappropriation of government funds, seven years for receiving gratification, and five years for obtaining valuable government properties without consideration.
But the sentences, according to the judge, are to run concurrently.

Justice Banjoko after truning down Nyame’s plea for leniency, said she was “morally outweighed by facts of the case.”

She said: “Citizens of Taraba had elected the defendant, a clergyman, on three separate occasions to govern them, which shows constant level of trust. The expectation must have been so high. “As a reverend, he must have been seen as an epitome of morality, piety and everything good. How will Reverend Nyame begin to explain to people of Taraba State his actions and inactions? How can he justify causing such a colossal loss to the state?”

She added that Nyame ,

“behaved like a common thief with unbridled greed,”

saying his sentence would serve as a deterrent to other public office holders.

The court directed EFCC to return all the funds it recovered in the process of its investigation into the case to the coffers of Taraba State. The Judge further dismissed a no-case-submission that was made by the defendant who contended that EFCC failed to, by way of credible evidence, nail him to the alleged fraud.

They noted that they have visited the former President at his hilltop home in Abeokuta and he has clarified himself from all the shady deals and urged them not to fold their arms and allow fraudsters take away their inheritance.

The chiefs now want the state government to invoke the recently passed anti land grabbing law on the suspected land speculators that have been terrorising them in some of their villages like Leshi, Sokenu, liasu among others.

In his reaction, the police Public Relations officer of Ogun state command assured them that the Police will not treat the matter with kid gloves and they are set to arrest and prosecute any land grabbers arrested in the affected areas and other parts of the state

Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, the Nigerian politician, businessman says he is intensifying plans to disrupt the plague of malaria in the state.

In an interview, Dr. Hussein Akor State director, head of the Malaria Elimination Programme and Ministry of Health, said:
“the state government has continued to distribute treated mosquito nets to residents to reduce the disease. drugs worth thousands of Naira have also been made available for the treatment of people infected with malaria.”

“the government would continue to give critical attention on the effect of the malaria disease in the state, government would not rest on its oars until the disease was completely eradicated.”

Akor called on residents to keep their environment clean, noting that drainages should be opened to avoid stagnant water which breeds mosquitoes within the localities, adding that malaria was prevalent in the state because of people’s failure to keep their environment clean to ward off mosquitoes.

He said: “Many people don’t know the damage malaria can cause to the human system and as such do not take prescribed drugs to combat it which is quite wrong.’’

According to him, frequent blood test will ensure that people get to know the degree of their infection and the right drugs to ensure the effectiveness of drugs taken.

The director also urged people to cooperate with government in its efforts to eradicate malaria, adding that people should appreciate the resources government is investing in eliminating the disease in the state.

The former governor said he took that action in order to curb systemic waste and ensure accountability in governance, Daily Sun reports.

“I told him, Mr. President, you can come in the morning and go in the evening because I don’t have a place for you to stay,” Obi explained. He disclosed this on Tuesday, May 24, while delivering a lecture on leadership at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) during the 2016 edition of the Biennial Chinua Achebe Memorial Lecture, organised in honour of the late literary icon, by the institution’s Faculty of Arts.

According to him, the maintenance of the Presidential Lodge in the state was stopped during his administration to utilize resources. Obi said the irrational celebration of corrupt politicians and their ill-gotten wealth by the masses was to blame for the corruption and rot in the country.

Also speaking, Chuka Utazi, the senator representing Enugu north senatorial district said there are many youths in the country capable handling leadership position but they are not given the opportunity.
