Watch the amazing display of Africa’s print by beautiful models and a special interview with fashionista Princess Ronke Ademiluyi, founder, of Africa Fashion Week, London and Nigeria, as she shares a bit about her journey into the industry and her source of inspiration.

The Africa Fashion Week Nigeria, AFWN, was established in 2014 to showcase talented fashion designers who remain largely unknown and to further strengthen and develop the international competitiveness of Nigeria’s fashion industry.

Africa Fashion Week Nigeria is an initiative that will celebrate and promote Nigeria’s diverse fashion culture.

It acts as a tool for designers who cannot yet afford to showcase on an international platform, giving them a chance to show their collections on the runway.

Talking about how she started, Princess Ronke said, I don’t like doing things small because the same time and effort you spent doing something small is the same time you spend doing something big so we started big in 2011 and we had about 60 designers from the continent of Africa and about 4700 visitors turned up.

It has been growing since then and the success of the first Africa Fashion Week in London has inspired so many people to start up fashion week in cities around the world.

Did you ever feel obligated to make sure it had everything to do with Africa or did you try to involve other cultures as well?

It’s African fashion week, it’s promoting African fashion, it’s showcasing the best of African fashion.

However, we do have some other people who are not really Africans but there are interested in the African cultures and fashion because when the designers come they don’t just come to showcase on the runway, they come with their culture and Africa has about 300,000 different tribes and when they come on the runway, it’s always a mixture of vibrant colours, culture and heritage fabric.

You do have an adIre hub in Ilefe yea?

Yes

Tell us about it.

It is an indigenous Adire factory. We opened it in 2021 under the chairmanship of his imperial Majesty Ooni of Ife. It was opened as a Covid bounce-back facility.

His majesty and I came up with the idea of using our heritage fabric as a way of creating a tour for women in the local community and since then it’s been growing.

We now work with the Obafemi Awolowo University under the textile department. Merging the student and women together to come up with innovative and creative modern designs.

The baby’s mother, Monsurat Lateef, 36, was duped by Adepoju, 23, who lives in the Badore neighborhood of Ajah, Lagos State, by professing to be in desperate need of housing.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, in a statement on Wednesday, said the suspect had a stillbirth and went to a hospital in Ibadan for treatment, where she met the 36-year-old mother of the baby, Monsurat Lateef.

The statement read, “The dragnet of the eagle-eyed crack detectives attached to the command’s Special Enquiry Bureau caught up with one Itunu Adepoju, 23, of Badore area, Ajah, Lagos State, who on July 19, 2022, surreptitiously absconded with a three-day-old female baby from her mother.

“Preliminary findings reveal that the mother, Monsurat Lateef, was delivered a female child on Saturday, July 16, 2022, to the delight of her family at the Mission House, Yahora Faith Mission, Itamerin, Ogbere.

“On Tuesday, July 19, 2022, she proceeded to Abaemu General Hospital, Ona-Ora, to initiate immunization proceedings for her daughter from where she met the suspect, who approached her as a friendly patient who also sought medical treatment.

“Unknown to Monsurat, the suspect had just suffered a stillbirth and had been referred to the same health facility for a scan.

“They got chatting and the suspect indicated an interest in moving down to Ibadan from Lagos, saying she was in dire need of accommodation.

“Monsurat, driven by empathy, decided to oblige the total stranger by assisting her to search for accommodation.

“In furtherance to the above, the complainant decided to invite her (the suspect) over to spend the night because, at the time, the house searching had encroached into the late evening.

“In what seemed a premeditated action around 1300hours, the suspect, Itunu Adepoju, who had now totally gained the confidence and trust of her host, pleaded to use a nearby Point-of-Sales terminal with the three-day-old baby carefully tucked away on her back.

“The money she intended to collect, according to her, was sent to her by her fiancé for the purpose of completing the renting process.

“The complainant obliged the suspect before she later realized that she had been tricked and that the suspect had absconded with her child.

“An investigation is ongoing and the matter will be expressly charged to court upon its completion.”

He urged citizens of the state to continue being helpful and unwavering in their provision of timely and reliable information, capable of always preventing crime before it starts.

Nigerian Comedian, Seyi Law, has revealed that the craziest thing he has ever done in his life was travelling from Lagos to Benin virtually every Saturday to see a girl who did not appreciate him.

Although a funny story, the comedian said that while it was going on, there was nothing funny about it.

“I stayed in Benin with my elder sister for a while and I was so much in love with the girl back then. It was during the time when you would be talking to a girl that you like her but she would not give you any response. Then I would go back home and begin to play Westlife songs and when I was done, I would move to Plantainshun Boys. I just finished secondary school during that period.

“Eventually, I had to come back to Lagos but that did not stop me from seeing her. I would wake up around 4am, leave Lagos for Benin and return that same day. The road was very bad and sometimes, I would spend about ten hours on the road. I would only get to see the girl for about two or three hours, then I would rush back to Lagos. That was how much I was in love but she never appreciated it. I did not have money then. There was a time we tried to re-connect on Facebook but I had got married then and I am very happy with my wife,” he said.

Briefing newsmen shortly after the closed session, Oyo State Governor Senator Abiola Ajimobi emphasised the need for regular interface amongst leaders in the region.

Correspondent Olutayo Famous Cole report that it’s a convergence of Governors from the nation’s Southwest region and they are in Ibadan the administrative and Political capital of the Old western State to brainstorm, now that most states are battling with financial and sustainability challenges.

The Consensus amongst Leaders here is that political differences had overtime promted division within the region.

The Leaders say it’s time to search for ways through which collective aspiration could be met.

It was not all about the challenges, the southwest Leaders also identified education as the foundation of development, which the region was identified with in the past.

To get back on track Industrial activities are set to be revamped, to achieve this the governors seek to develop through innovative thinking and integrated regional transport and energy infrastructure which they are sure would reignite the pioneering and revolutionary spirit of the southwest region.

Determined to forge a new path for the region, the governors have agreed to meet on a more frequent basis, with their next meeting scheduled for Ekiti state.

There, strategies to empower Nigerians to be more self reliant to weather the challenges of life would be discussed.

Prominent Nigerians have marked the 50th anniversary of the murder of Adekunle Fajuyi, the 1st Executive Governor of Old Western Nigeria and the then Head of State General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi.

They were brutally killed in the first counter coup witnessed in the nation’s history.

The brutal killings occurred as Fajuyi played host to Aguiyi-Ironsi.

The consensus amongst speakers who attended the golden anniversary of the incident was that Col Fajuyi was a patriot who rarely gets attention despite laying down his life in order to avert a bloody national dislocation.

With the present always in constant dialogue with the past, speakers reechoed the urgent need to reshape the national psyche and remold people’s attitude in the search for a national identity.

They reasoned that such goals can not be achieved when a gallant soldier like Lt Colonel Francis Adekunle Fajuyi who chose to voluntarily sacrifice his life in the counter coup of 29th January 1966 when cornered with his guest and then prime target, Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi, does not get due credit.

The speakers insist that true Nigerian heroes who made extraordinary sacrifice can be immortalised when history as a subject is included in the nation’s education curriculum, using indigenous language as the medium of communication.
