TVC NEWS visited some areas in Lagos to access the situation and we brought back this report.

Minister of power, works and housing, Babatunde Fashola has continued to assure Nigerians of his ministry’s determination to roll out meters in order to ensure that distribution companies charge electricity consumers only for energy consumed.

This is becoming a reality as most the companies are been complying with this directive.

At Okota – Isolo area of Lagos state, business owners say the use of the prepaid meter is laudable as compared to the old analog meters.

For the manager of the Oshodi business unit under the ikeja electricity distribution company, the roll out meters will be a continuous process.

He stated the ultimate aim is to reduce the issue of estimated billing to its barest minimum.

Meanwhile, Meter manufacturers want the federal government to put in place clear incentives for local production as opposed to importation of meters to help fast track the process.

TVCE, BUSINESS – Organised labour and Civil society organisations in Nigeria say only a reversal of the recent forty five per cent increment in electricity tariff will guarantee industrial peace and harmony.

They insist arbitrary increase cannot take effect when there is a subsisting court order restraining electricity distribution companies from going ahead with the increment.

Correspondent Joke Adisa reports that Nigerian workers and their leaders made good their threat to picket distribution companies, the regulatory commission and the National Assembly.

They are bent on registering their displeasure at the new tariff regime which took effect from the first of this month.

The take-off point is the Labour House recently renamed Pascal Bafyau House.

The protesters file into the streets causing traffic jams and chanting solidarity songs

Placards in hand, they head for the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company where they insist that the electricity tariff shouldn’t be hiked until all consumers are provided with pre-paid meters

Civil society organisations were also duly represented at the mass rally.

Their representatives want the anti-corruption fight of the present administration extended to probe the processes leading to the privitisation of PHCN.

From the Zone five office of the distribution company, the protesters head for the office of the electricity regulatory commission.

Their message remains unchanged: Increment in tariff must be put on hold until all consumers are metered.

At the National Assembly Complex, Senate President, Bukola Saraki leads other federal lawmakers to receive the protesting activists.

He assures the workers that they have the National Assembly’s support, in fighting against policies that seem to add to the woes of the common man

TVC E, BUSINESS – The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Wednesday said it achieved a new record peak generation of 5074.7megawatts (Mw).

A statement endorsed by Assistant General Manager, Public Affairs, Clement Ezeolisah, said it also recorded the highest maximum daily energy wheeled nationwide of 109,372Mw February 2.

TCN said the new peak generation of 5074.7Mw was attained at 9.30pm February 2, while the previous peak generation was 4883.9Mw achieved on November 23 last year. TCN added that the previous highest maximum daily energy wheeled nationwide was 107,142.32MwH recorded on January 26.

According to the managing director, System Operation/Market Operation, TCN, Dipak Sarma, the twin peak achievements is attributed to the enhanced cooperation among all the power sector stakeholders and concerted efforts by system operators at the National Control Centre and other stations to ensure that all generated power is wheeled to the distribution companies and that there is no stranded power.
