Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray crowned Zozibini Tunzi at the event held in Atlanta on Sunday night. 26-year-old Zozibini Tunzi is quite active in fight against gender based violence.

Her Miss Universe biography describes her as, “She has devoted her social media campaign to changing the narrative around gender stereotypes. She is a proud advocate for natural beauty and encourages women to love themselves the way they are.”

When asked why she’s the right choice, she said: “I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me — with my kind of skin and my kind of hair — was never considered to be beautiful.
I think it is time that that stops today. I want children to look at me and see my face and I want them to see their faces reflected in mine.”

Iris takes over from former Miss Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach making her the 65th Miss Universe.

According to her, she’ll dedicate a good part of her year as Miss Universe towards advocating for dental and oral hygiene.

First and second runners-up were Miss Haiti (Raquel Pelissier) and Miss Colombia (Andrea Tovar) with Kenya, Indonesia, Mexico, Peru, Panama, Phillippines, Canada, Brazil, France, Thailand and the U.S. also making it to the list of top finalists.

Crowds packed the Mall of Asia Arena as each candidate showcased her swimsuits, evening gowns and national costumes in front of the judges.

The preliminary competition that started on Thursday will whittle down the crowded field to the top 12 candidates for the pageant night, the Miss Universe website said.

“The whole world is being united, and even though we don’t know each other, we still enjoy the event,” said Apple Natividad, one of the many spectators who attended the show.

Some even dressed like Miss Universe candidates to join the fanfare.

“This is a venue for beauty, but also the beauty of the heart, especially for us Filipinos who are fanatics for pageants,” said Rania Ziateh, who wore a Miss Philippines sash.

Over half a million people are expected to tune in to watch the coronation night next week, organizers said.

Filipina beauty queen Pia Wurtzbach currently holds the Miss Universe crown from 2015.
