The Lagos State Government has extended the ban on commercial motorcycles popularly called Okada to four more Local Government Areas and five Local Council Development Areas.

As gathered, the state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed full enforcement from September 1, 2022.

Kosofe Local Government, Oshodi-Isolo Local Government, Shomolu Local Government, and Mushin Local Government are the additional councils where the whole Okada prohibition is enforced.

Other LCDAs include Ikosi-Isherri, Agboyi-Ketu, Isolo, Bariga, and Odi-Olowo.

The use of commercial motorbikes on highways, as well as in six local governments and nine LCDAs, had been outlawed by the governor, Sanwo-Olu in May. He declared the ban to be “indefinite and complete.”

The governor named Ikeja, Surulere, Eti-Osa, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island, and Apapa as the six local governments. The prohibition came after a restriction on the use of commercial motorbikes in February 2020.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the State’s Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 guided the government’s decision to address the commotion and danger caused by Okada activities in the designated locations right away. He instructed the police to uphold the ruling without exception.

He said, “After a critical review of our restriction on Okada activities in the first six Local Government Areas where we restricted them on February 1, 2020, we have seen that the menace has not abated. We are now directing a total ban on Okada activities across the highways and bridges within these six Local Government and their Local Council Development Areas, effective from June 1, 2022.

“This is a phased ban we are embarking on this period, and we expect that within the short while when this ban will be enforced, Okada riders in other places where their activities are yet to be banned can find something else to do.

“We have given the notice now and we expect all commercial motorcycles plying the routes in the listed councils and areas to vacate the highways before enforcement begins. The enforcement will be total.”

Following the outcry as a result of the ban, the governor insisted on May 24 that the state government would move forward with its proposed ban on motorcycles, adding that the government and security services were in agreement with the ban’s implementation in the state’s designated motorcycle-free zones.

Additionally, he gave the citizens of Lagos his word that the state’s security system would not be jeopardized in any manner, allowing them to go about their daily lives and conduct business without fear or favour.

He said, “The security meeting gives us an opportunity for us to review the recent pronouncement on the future banning of Okada (motorcycles) in some selected local governments and LCDAs.

“We are able to put strategies in place. All of us were able to identify a lot of other things we need to do to embark on advocacy and ensure that we communicate effectively and efficiently to citizens. And that is why you see us giving out handbills in all of the major languages that we have in the country.

“There is a radio jingle being sent out to also communicate to people. I am also aware that there is a plan for advocacy on television stations as well.

“It is a people-driven initiative that we all agreed to live and to comport ourselves in a similar manner. And we know what has been the effect of this. So, I am happy that all of us, the security operatives and government are on the same page with this and we will also be going ahead with our plans.”

Some Lagosians have fallen prey to another housing scam in Lagos. Oluwasegun Adewara and one Okeowo have been identified as the two suspected developers participating in the scam.

They are said to have fled after allegedly scamming no fewer than 70 prospective tenants over an apartment at 16, Zamba Street, Lawason, Surulere, Lagos State.

According to Punch, the prospective tenants visited the building, which was under construction, to inspect its premises and afterwards made payments to the developers.

After verifying the payments, it was discovered that the suspects gave the victims receipts and designated different times for them to take possession of the apartments.

The situation, however, changed when the individuals arrived at the residence on 16, Zamba Street in Lawason on the dates stated by the developers but found that there were more potential renters than there were apartments in the one-story building.

In a report, one of the victims, Jacob Dunya,

“I paid N600,000 for a mini-flat for a year directly to the account of the developer, Oluwasegun Olanrewaju Adewara, on April 26, 2022.

“When I visited the house, I noticed that the work at the site was less as it was left for them to fix only the doors and the windows.

“So, they gave last Monday to collect keys to my apartment. But when I got there, the developer told me the place was not ready and said I should return on Monday, June 20, 2022.

“When I got there, I saw them fixing the keys to the doors and I was told to come back again this week Tuesday.

“I never knew that last Thursday and Friday, people had come around to fight them to access their apartments.

“I quickly rushed down on Friday and noticed that there were hoodlums around asking people to pay N100,000 so they could break down the padlocks used in locking some of the doors so they could have access to the apartments.

“The developers are nowhere to be found and we have yet to hear from the owners of the land and their lawyers. Over 120 people paid for the 14 flats in this building and more people are still coming.

“The money people paid will be about N60m because some people made advance payments for five years. They also gave us receipts. The matter was reported at the Itire Police Station.”

Jenifer Ihemeje, a different victim, lamented the occurrence and claimed some potential tenants sobbed and fainted.

She said,

“I paid N650,000 in April to Mr Okeowo and others, but they kept postponing till June 14, 2022, when I sent a text message to threaten them.

“It was another person who also paid for a flat that informed me that about 10 people paid for a single flat.

“The person said a lot of people gathered at the house on Friday over the incident. So, I rushed down there on Saturday and met people crying, shouting and some people even fainted.”

Love Chidi, a widow, claimed that in January she paid N250,000 for a single hotel before departing for her husband’s funeral in Abia State.

“But when I returned, the developers said they had not completed work on the building.

“My husband died in December and we were sent out of the house we were staying because the building had cracked and was likely to collapse.

“So, I came here, paid the developer and left for the burial only to return to face this war. There are over 117 people stranded here,” she added.

SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the state police public relations officer who confirmed the event, said the command has started a manhunt for the runaway suspects.

“But they are not 120; they are 70 people. The developer collected money for 15 flats and absconded,” he added.

Also, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said,

“We have the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority Law 2022. The matter is described under that law and it is a very serious offence for anybody to collect money from people and deny them accommodation.

“But the problem is that our people don’t make enquiries; anybody who puts a board outside to say ‘To let’ or to say that he is a developer, people will just gather money and give him and the person will disappear.

“There are some of them who have no addresses but only telephone numbers, so this law makes it compulsory for anybody who wants to practise in that space to register as a practitioner.

“And once you register with the agency, should you collect money from anybody, it will be very easy to grab you.

“Now, we have a team that is going round on enforcement. Many people have faced the law for duping people of their hard-earned money and the agency has recovered money for people and resolved many disputes.” he added

TVC E, MUSIC – A collaboration by top Nigerian Music artists; Iyanya, Yemi Alade, Tekno, Olamide and Selebobo, the performing artistes came together to film a befitting visual for the track – “Mama Oyoyo”

A move facilitated by Premium Music, the artistes converged at the Music Africa studio at Surulere and dramatised the emotive lyrics dedicated to all beautiful mothers in Nigeria and all over the world.

According to the management of Premium Music, as with the audio part of the song, the video will celebrate every woman, sister, aunt in appreciation of the strength and courage with which they support their families.

The video recording was a mix of laughter and creativity as the artistes dramatised ingenuous ways to show their love for motherhood.

Speaking with The Nation at the shoot of the video, Nigerian superstar, Iyanya, said; “I’m happy being a part of this. I was just being natural in the track. For me, it is a way of saying thank you to my mum for being the woman that she was to me. The music has given me a very strong purpose and a sense of not wanting to let anybody down.”

The video was produced under the expert hands of Aje Film Works. According to the management of the award winning production company, they chose to be the project because of the creativity, research, entertainment and innovation depicted in the song. “Those qualities matched our core values and we just had to do our bit to join these creative stars to celebrate our mothers by telling the story of this song in a unique way.
