Chairman of COSON Tony Okoroji, is happy with what the musicians have attained, without the assistance of the Nigerian Government.

The COSON House is a place for continuous dissemination of information to ensure the concept of intellectual property stands firm in Nigeria.

They have also demanded that Banwo tender a conspicuous and unreserved apology to Tony Okoroji and COSON on Facebook and four Nigerian newspapers, namely, the Guardian, the Sun, the Punch and Vanguard within seven days.

The lawyers have furthermore demanded that Banwo pay the sum of N100,000,000 (One Hundred Million Naira) to Chief Okoroji and another N100,000,000 (One Hundred Million Naira) to COSON for what the lawyers have described as significant injury caused by Mr. Banwo to Chief Okoroji and COSON.

A letter dated May 5, 2017 sent to Banwo and signed by Lagos lawyer, Justin Ige of Creative Legal, Seun Omotoba & Co, says: ‘We refer to your widely circulated publication on Facebook titled “TIME To Blow Whistle On Toni Okoroji: How Did Tony Okoroji spend over N300,000,000 in Copyright Royalties collected on behalf of Nigerian artistes” and other vile statements you have repeatedly published in the last fortnight against our clients. ‘By the said publications, you have made several blatantly false, baseless and malicious statements including innuendos which were clearly intended by you to lower the hard won reputation of our clients and to incite stakeholders in the Nigerian music industry to revolt against our clients and to distort and destroy their legacies.”

Recall that there has been running battle between Copyright Society of Nigeria and Musical Copyright Society Nigeria (MCSN) over collective management organisation of musical returns for artistes.

According to sources, the meeting was attended by a United States-based legal practitioner and a member of the board, Ope Banwo, who was said to have flown into the country just to attend the meeting.

Banwo, who is the founder of Stingomania Records, informed that he was determined to attend the meeting because he wanted to be part of history, given the approval of MCSN by the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) to operate as a Collective Management Organisation (CMO) after 24 years of intense struggle.

Director General of MCSN Mayo Ayilaran is seen in a photograph with Banwo and Salman, a lawyer with Banwo’s chambers, brandishing the NCC’s certificate of approval.

Recall that recently, the Federal Government, through the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, directed the NCC to issue, with immediate effect, a license to the MCSN to operate as a collecting society for the purpose of the Copyright Act, a move that has been rejected by COSON as illegal.

Tony Okoroji, Chairman of Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), last week, dismissed the approval of MCSN as a joke.

Like most parents, G-Wilz’s parents were not in sync with an idea that their son wanted the sort of reputation that surrounds rappers.

One thing that is working for G-Wilz has been his ability to tap into his inner Nigerian core and blend his vibes with the roots. Listen to him and you’ll think of say, a Phyno.

The artiste discovered by Tony Okoroji says late rapper Dagrin paved a path for young rappers and he intends to keep the dream of Dagrin alive by promoting rap music.

The Chairman of Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), Tony Okoroji, has said that there will be no hiding place for telecommunication companies operating in Nigeria who do not respect the intellectual property rights of creative people whose works these companies exploit for profit.

Speaking at the COSON Stakeholders’ Forum which took place in Ibadan on September 8, Okoroji said that henceforth, telcos will not be granted a copyright safe haven in Nigeria.

According to the former president of PMAN, in the digital age, the telecommunication companies have become first line players in the distribution of music. He insisted that it will be suicidal for the music industry not to insist that these companies play within the rules and in accordance with the law.

Okoroji said that since COSON decided to take to court the matter of the horrendous copyright infringement engaged in by some of the telecommunication companies, the companies have resorted to ‘cheap and unimpressive blackmail and divide and rule tactics’.

“Some of the telcos have begun to issue press releases and launch insidious campaigns suggesting to our stakeholders that COSON is working against the interest of its members.

“They are carrying on a whispering campaign telling Nigerian musicians that by upholding their rights and exposing the massive injury being done to them, COSON is endangering their careers.

“They are even trying to give the impression that by appointing a few Nigerian artistes as their ‘brand ambassadors’, the music industry should kneel down and grovel to them when these companies go home with about 70% of the income from every piece of music they sell while the artistes, the record labels, the VAS companies fight over a mere 30% of the money.

“The composers and publishers who create the music do not even get one naira as these companies rob Peter to pay Paul,” he said.

TVC E, MUSIC – The Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), has challenged the Federal Government to implement the copyright levy scheme.

President of the Society,Tony Okoroji explains that the scheme will provide aid not just for the music industry but also for the movie and literary industries.

He denounced the system that has made it impossible for key players in the creative industries to benefit from the copyright levy scheme more than 22 years after the law was enacted.

Okoroji insisted that with the Private Copy Levy in operation, the government may no longer be obliged to dole out money to individuals or associations in the creative sector because they can earn their own money.
