The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) says Nigeria’s population has hit a new all time high of 201 million!

In its 2019 state of the world population report, UNFPA said Nigeria’s growth rate has been at an average of 2.6 percent from 2010 to 2019. The fertility rate among Nigerian women has dropped from 6.4 in 1969 to 5.3 in 2019; this means an average Nigerian woman gives birth to at least five children.

Global fertility rate, or the average number of births per woman stood at 4.8 in 1969; 2.9 in 1994; and 2.5 in 2019. The report says contraceptive prevalence rate among Nigerian women aged 15-49 is only 19 percent, adding that decision making on sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights among these women has averaged at 51 percent between 2007 to 2018.

This means 49 percent of Nigerian women still do not have the power to decide on their sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights. The UN agency estimated that Nigeria’s population has grown from 54.7 million in 1969 to 105.4 million in 1994 and 201.0 million in 2019. Of this 201 million, 44 percent or 88.44 million are between the ages of 0 and 14, while 32 percent, 64.32 are within the ages of 10 and 24.

The reports revealed that “reproductive rights are still out of reach for too many women, including the more than 200 million women who want to prevent a pregnancy but cannot access modern contraceptive information and services. Ultimately, almost all of the 4.3 billion people of reproductive age around the world today will have had inadequate access to sexual and reproductive health services at some point In 1969 world population reached 3.6 billion, up about 1 billion from only 17 years earlier, leading to the establishment of UNFPA.

The UN agency has succeeded in reducing fertility rates worldwide by about 50 percent. In the least developed countries, fertility was about six births per woman in 1969.

TVC E. The United Nations Children agency has warned that 80,000 Nigerian children will die unless they receive treatment and Nearly half a million children will face starvation in north-eastern Nigeria

The region is in the grip of a “catastrophic” humanitarian crisis created by Boko Haram’s Islamic uprising that has killed more than 20,000 people and left over two million displaced.

The UN said that they are “extremely concerned” for the 400,000 children trapped in the Borno state left largely inaccessible to aid agencies by the on-going seven-year uprising.

According to Unicef executive director, Anthony Lake “If they do not receive the treatment they need, one in five of these children will die.”

Fears for children in Maiduguri, the biggest city in Nigeria’s north east, were raised earlier this year.

Doctors Without Borders said in November that thousands of children already have died, including 10 to 25% of children admitted to its 110-bed Maiduguri emergency treatment centre.

Nigeria’s senate is investigating allegations that government agencies are diverting food aid that could help prevent those deaths.

TVC E. President Buhari said on Thursday that, he would be open to U.N. bodies coming in to act as intermediaries in any talks with Boko Haram Islamist militants on the release of about 200 kidnapped schoolgirls.

Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to free the girls, whose abduction almost two and a half years ago from the northeastern village of Chibok triggered international campaigns and piled pressure on his predecessor Goodluck Jonathan.

Nigeria would “welcome intermediaries such as U.N. outfits, to step in”, Buhari told U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on sidelines of the annual U.N. General Assembly in New York, a statement issued by the president’s office said.

Buhari last year said for the first time his government was ready to negotiate over the girls. In August said he would let the Islamist militant group choose a non-profit organization as an intermediary but the group has not commented on the proposal.

Any negotiations would be the first publicly known talks between the government and Boko Haram, whose seven-year insurgency to create an Islamic state in the northeast has killed 15,000 people and displaced more than two million.

“The challenge is in getting credible and bona fide leadership of Boko Haram to discuss with,” said Buhari.

Boko Haram pledged allegiance to Islamic State last year but signs of a rift emerged after IS announced a new leader for what it described as its West African operations. Boko Haram’s hitherto leader Abubakar Shekau appeared to contradict the appointment in a later video message.

“The split in the insurgent group is not helping matters. Government had reached out, ready to negotiate, but it became difficult to identify credible leaders,” said the president.

Nigeria’s failure to find the kidnapped children prompted an outcry at home and abroad. Critics of Buhari’s predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, said his government was too slow to act.

Boko Haram published a video in August which apparently showed recent footage of dozens of the girls and stated that some had been killed in air strikes.

Authorities said in May that one of the missing girls had been found and the president vowed to rescue the others.

Nigeria is battling the jihadist group on the ground and with air strikes. A multi-national joint task force – comprising troops from Nigeria and neighboring Niger, Cameroon, Chad and Benin – is also fighting the militants.

TVC E. The exodus of Nigerians fleeing violence in the country’s north-eastern regions continues amid an influx of sixteen

thousand refugees into neighbouring Cameroon, the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) has reported.

Speaking to journalists at a press briefing in Geneva few months ago, UNHCR spokesperson Adrian Edwards said Cameroonian authorities had observed a steady flow of refugees streaming in through the “extremely volatile” border regions of Makaria, Logone Birni and Fotokol, just south of Lake Chad, rendering them vulnerable to attacks from the Nigerian insurgent group, Boko Haram.

Clashes between Boko Haram and Nigerian Government forces have intensified in recent weeks as fighting has spilled across borders and become increasingly regionalized. During the past few weeks alone, the group has also perpetrated deadly attacks against civilians in Chad, Cameroon and Niger.

Mr. Edwards noted that UNHCR was already planning daily transfers of 2,000 refugees to Minawao, where there is an established refugee camp currently hosting more than 32,600 and where urgent shelter and sanitation construction is under way. At the camp, he added, UNHCR would also be providing basic relief aid, such as blankets, kitchen sets and soap.

From May 23 to May 24, hundreds of countries, companies and philanthropists will converge on Istanbul, Turkey, for the first-ever World Humanitarian Summit. The summit has been widely described as an unprecedented effort aimed at revamping humanitarian aid and global responses to modern-day crises and finding practical solutions to the global humanitarian challenges.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that the summit was convened as part of efforts to tackle what he described as “the worst humanitarian crisis since World War II’’.

He said that the summit must usher in new era of global solidarity, adding that its main goal was to reaffirm the society’s commitment to humanity and humanitarian principles.
“We must not fail the people who need us, particularly when they need us most. First, the best way to achieve a bold and courageous change is to make sure that leaders are there to deliver it.

Raquelina was more than a teenager from Mozambique; she was the embodiment of why the world needs to invest in the health, well-being and future of young women everywhere.

With her passionate drive and expansive heart, she achieved a depth of character that most people, no matter their age, may never attain.”

Raquelina was a young Mozambican woman, then in grade 10, who in May 2013, during a visit by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon to her school, Matheus Samsão Muthemba School in Polana Caniço, Maputo, Mozambique, asked, if “a girl could become Secretary-General” and, if so, what she needed to do to achieve that goal.

Impressed by the question, Mr. Ban invited her to come to UN Headquarters in New York as his special guest for a day. Sponsored by UN Women, the visit materialized on 12 August 2014, International Youth Day.

“We would like to convey our condolences institutionally, and personally, for those who knew Raquelina,” said Florence Raes, UN Women Representative in Mozambique.

“We will continue to honour her memory by pursuing her dream, bringing about broader access to education for girls as well as secure environments free of violence, so that any girl—whether vulnerable, disenfranchised or from the south—could aspire to one day be the United Nations Secretary-General.

TVC E. The United Nations Human Rights watch under the chairmanship of Zeid Al’Hussein on Monday in Geneva has called on affected countries with the Zika Virus to make available sexual and reproductive health counselling to women and uphold their right to terminate pregnancies.

The commissioner Al’Hussein said, in a statement that laws and policies that restrict women access to these services must be urgently reviewed in line with human rights obligations.

He also said, that this has become necessary in order to ensure any affected woman the right to health for all in practice.

This is because the virus has been found to be harmful to kids, it leads to babies being born with small heads and birth defects the medical term is microcephaly.

The United States of America Centre for Disease Control & Prevention states that microcephaly is linked to

Seizures

Developmental delay, such as problems with speech or other developmental milestones (like sitting, standing, and walking)

Intellectual disability (decreased ability to learn and function in daily life)

Problems with movement and balance

Feeding problems, such as difficulty swallowing

Hearing loss

Vision problems

His Spokeswoman, Cecile Pouilly, said there are some Countries like El Salvador, Malta, Poland and Liechtenstein amongst others that criminalize abortion.

She explained that as a result of such law, the commission was asking those governments to go back and change those laws.

Pouilly said it has become so urgent to change the law because such countries cannot ask the affected women not to become pregnant.

She said such countries must make available first information and also the possibility to stop their pregnancies if they wish so.

The current outbreak of Zika Virus, a mosquito-bourne virus has spread around South America. Thousands of people including pregnant women have been infected.
