Legendary reggae artiste, Ukeleke Elumelu popularly known as ‘Ras Kimono’ has kicked the bucket. The legend passed away on Sunday, June 10 at a hospital in Lagos.

The tragic news of his death was announced by the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture in Lagos state, Steve Ayorinde. His death is a huge loss to the Nigerian entertainment industry and his country Nigeria.

Kimono was known as a revolutionary who through his music fought for a better Nigeria. He sang for political awakening and wanted his country to be great again.

Born Ukeleke Onwubuya on May 9 in Delta State, he celebrated his 60th birthday amidst fanfare in Lagos a few weeks ago.

Kimono, 60, was known for his hit songs ‘Rum-Bar Stylée’ and ‘We no want’. Ras Kimono rose to stardom after the release of his debut album ‘Under Pressure’ in the late ‘80s.
The late singer started out his career as a student of Gbenoba Secondary School Agbor, Delta State and later as a member of the Jastix Reggae Ital, alongside, Majek Fashek, Amos McRoy Jegg and Black Rice Osagie. The late reggae music icon won several awards including the Nigeria Music Awards and Fame Music Awards amongst others.

Ras Kimono was married to Sybil, a dancer who currently resides in the United States of America.

Fans, friends and colleagues of the late singer have poured in tributes in honour of the legend.
