Court adjourns hearing on Falana suit against United Airlines, others

TVC E, POLITICS – A Federal High Court in Lagos has adjourned hearing on a refiled suit by human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, against United Airlines, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The hearing which will proceed on March the 8th is challenging the alleged unlawful deportation and inhuman treatment of Jacob Ajomale by officials of the United States in 2010.

At the sitting earlier today being presided by Justice Ibrahim Buba, the second respondent, Ministry of Internal Affairs was struck out while the Plaintiff joined Minister of Interior as a party to the suit.

Ajomale claimed to have been carrying in his body a tracking device, in form of a micro chip, allegedly inserted into him, through his anus, by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement prior to his deportation.

Falana had sought compensation for Ajomale in sums of $100m and N100m respectfully from the respondents.

Rising on a matter of urgent national importance, Representative Phillip Shaibu from Edo State says the speed limiter being planned by the FRSC is an outdated technology that has been tried and dumped in a country like Kenya.

He says there is an alternative applicable technology that will even generate revenues for the government

Other members, including the Speaker described the speed limiter device being introduced by FRSC as exploitative and only beneficial to the supplier.
