Remembering Franz Beckenbauer: A Football Icon’s Legacy

Franz Beckenbauer, known as “the Kaiser,” made history as one of the three individuals to win the World Cup both as a player and coach, achieving the latter in 1990. Notably, he became the first-ever defender to win the Ballon d’Or, accomplishing this feat twice in 1972 and 1976 and consistently ranking among the top three on five occasions.

Regrettably, Franz Beckenbauer passed away at the age of 78. The family announced his peaceful passing on Sunday, stating that he was surrounded by loved ones. As a central figure in German football, Beckenbauer left an indelible mark. Born in Munich in 1945, he played a pivotal role in establishing Bayern Munich as a powerhouse.

Beckenbauer’s on-field presence was characterized by class and dominance, particularly during the 1960s and 70s, where he virtually invented the central defensive sweeper role. He earned 103 caps for West Germany, securing victories in the 1972 European Championship and the 1974 World Cup on home soil.

As a coach, he led West Germany to the 1986 World Cup final and achieved success four years later in Italy. Following his coaching career, Beckenbauer transitioned to football administration. However, he faced challenges, including a fine by FIFA’s ethics committee in 2016 related to the investigation into corruption over the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

In his later years, Beckenbauer dealt with health issues, making his last appearance at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena in August 2022. UEFA, Bundesliga, and the English Premier League paid tribute to the football icon, acknowledging his impact on German football. Rudi Voller, World Cup winner and director of the German national team, expressed deep sadness at losing a great friend and described Beckenbauer as a significant personality in German football.
