Undersea Cable Damage Causes Internet Outages Across West Africa: Nigeria, Ghana, and More Affected

Internet outages in several West African countries, including Nigeria and Ghana, have been attributed to damage to undersea cables, according to NetBlocks, a cybersecurity watchdog. The disruption, impacting connectivity in countries such as Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Liberia, and Benin Republic, was confirmed in a statement released by NetBlocks.

The incident, which resulted in significant reductions in connectivity across the region, was exacerbated by multiple subsea cable failures. Major undersea cables like the West Africa Cable System, MainOne, and ACE were affected, as reported by Bloomberg. MTN Nigeria acknowledged the disruption, attributing it to damage to international undersea cables across East and West Africa.Meanwhile, the National Communications Authority in Ghana disclosed that multiple undersea cable disruptions led to a widespread outage of internet services in the country.

Mobile Network Operators have been working to restore services, with customers experiencing challenges accessing internet, data, and Voice over IP services. Concerned individuals have taken to social media platforms to express their frustrations, prompting telecom providers to issue apologies and assure customers of ongoing efforts to resolve the issue.
