Tony Mowbray Steps Down as Birmingham City Manager to Focus on Recovery

Tony Mowbray has resigned as manager of Birmingham City to concentrate on his recovery following major surgery, the club announced on Tuesday.

The 60-year-old initially took a break from his coaching duties in February and officially went on medical leave in March. Mowbray has decided to prioritize his health and spend more time with his family, according to the third-tier club.

Birmingham City CEO Garry Cook praised Mowbray’s timely decision. “Tony’s prompt communication allows us to begin a thorough search for a new leader who can guide our club forward, ensuring they are in place before pre-season begins,” Cook said in a statement.

Mowbray joined Birmingham City in January following the dismissal of Wayne Rooney. During his tenure, he secured four wins out of eight matches, including notable victories against his former clubs Blackburn Rovers and Sunderland.

Gary Rowett was appointed as interim manager for the last eight games of the season. Despite a victory over Norwich City on the final day, Birmingham City was relegated to League One.
