Guillermo del Toro Teases Emotional Take on Frankenstein

Triple Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro has revealed that his upcoming Frankenstein movie won’t be a traditional horror film. Instead, he promises a deeply emotional and personal story that explores themes of fatherhood and identity.

Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival during a conversation with composer Alexandre Desplat, del Toro described the project as “an incredibly emotional film… about being a father, being a son.”

Known for his visionary work in films like Hellboy and The Shape of Water, del Toro emphasized that the movie would have “real heart,” distancing it from the typical creature-feature horror style.

“In today’s cinema, emotion is the new punk,” he declared, adding that there’s no shame in being “extremely emotional.”

The director’s collaboration with Desplat has previously earned them both Oscars for The Shape of Water (2017), and their creative synergy continues with Frankenstein.

Whether this new spin on the classic monster tale will be a bold reinvention or a risky departure remains to be seen.
