Why I Abandoned Law for Acting – Femi Adebayo Opens Up

Renowned Nigerian actor and producer Femi Adebayo has candidly revealed why he left a promising legal career to pursue acting full-time—a decision that changed the trajectory of his life and cemented his place in Nollywood.

In a recent interview with Pulse, the University of Ibadan law graduate—who also holds a Master’s degree in Law—recounted how he initially juggled a modest legal career while treating acting as just a hobby. At the time, his monthly salary as a lawyer was ₦20,000.

“Honestly speaking, that was when I started working as a lawyer. My salary then was just ₦20,000 on a monthly basis. And acting was a hobby for me all this while,” Adebayo said.

The turning point came when he was offered a 3-day acting role that paid ₦50,000—more than double his monthly earnings as a lawyer.

“Then I was invited for an acting role, and they were ready to pay me ₦50,000 for three days. As a lawyer, I was getting ₦20,000 for one month. I said, ‘Femi, this acting is your calling.’”

That pivotal moment inspired Femi Adebayo to walk away from law and fully commit to his passion for acting—a move that has clearly paid off. Today, he is celebrated as one of Nollywood’s most accomplished actors, known for his versatility in both Yoruba-language films and mainstream Nollywood productions.

Adebayo, the son of veteran Nigerian actor Adebayo Salami (Oga Bello), has carved a unique niche for himself in the entertainment industry. He has not only starred in numerous critically acclaimed films but also garnered awards as both an actor and a producer.

Femi Adebayo’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of following one’s passion and being courageous enough to seize unexpected opportunities—even when they lead away from conventional paths like law or medicine.
