Could Funke Akindele’s The Four Be Her Biggest Film Yet?

Funke Akindele The Four Movie

Funke Akindele is not one to leave the cinema calendar empty for long. After a run that has rewritten what Nigerian audiences expect from local films, the country’s highest-grossing filmmaker has confirmed her next theatrical project. The Four: No One Fights Alone will open in cinemas worldwide on 11 December 2026.

The film is produced under her Funke Akindele Network (FAAN TV) banner and will be distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, the same partnership that handled her most recent box-office successes. Akindele is writing, directing and producing.

What Is Funke Akindele’s The Four About?

At its centre is a story of four women bound by friendship and a shared determination. Esosa and three other fiercely loyal women find themselves fighting for the future of a young man they love. Their path moves between the quieter rhythms of Odu Community and the energy of city life, testing courage, faith and loyalty in ways that force hard choices around motherhood, sacrifice and unity.

The production leans into Nigerian cultural markers—music, fashion, language and tradition—to ground the drama in a recognisable world.

Funke Akindele Leads an All-Star Cast in The Four

The ensemble is one of the more interesting mixes Akindele has assembled. She appears alongside Bisola Aiyeola, Chioma Akpotha, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Timini Egbuson, Lateef Adedimeji, Ali Nuhu, Uzor Arukwe, Ronke Oshodi Oke, Antar Laniyan and Wunmi Toriola.

Singer Waje and Afrobeats artist Shoday are also part of the cast, joined by entertainment personalities Samuel Banks, Kolapo Omotosho and Ayomide Iwasokun.

The combination of established Nollywood performers with music and lifestyle figures is deliberate. It suggests a film that wants both dramatic weight and broader cultural reach.

Waje and Shoday Join the Cast of The Four

Funke Akindele has spoken about the intent behind the project.

“Audiences have grown with us over the years, and they expect stories that entertain while reflecting who we are,” she said. “With The Four, we are exploring the relationships that shape us, challenge us and stay with us. I think audiences will find a part of themselves in this story.”

We've fallen in love with Shoday the artist. Now, we get to meet Shoday the actor. The singer joins the star-studded cast of Funke Akindele's upcoming film, The Four. We can't wait

Why The Four Matters After Funke Akindele’s Box-Office Run

That audience connection has been the foundation of her commercial dominance. A Tribe Called Judah became the first Nollywood film to cross the ₦1 billion mark. Everybody Loves Jenifa followed and raised the bar further. Behind The Scenes, released in December 2025, went on to become the highest-grossing Nigerian film to date, crossing well beyond ₦2 billion and extending her streak as the industry’s most reliable theatrical draw.

December releases have become something of a signature for her, moments when cinemas fill and conversations spill beyond the screen.

Why December Is Important for Funke Akindele and Nollywood

The Four arrives in that same seasonal slot. For Nigerian cinema, another major Akindele title in December carries practical weight. It sustains the habit of theatrical event films that pull audiences back into cinemas at a time of year when family and social viewing peaks.

For Akindele herself, it continues a pattern of choosing stories that centre ordinary women navigating pressure, loyalty and the cost of standing together. After the family dynamics of A Tribe Called Judah and the more personal texture of Behind The Scenes, this focus on female friendship and motherhood feels like a natural progression rather than a sharp turn.

What We Know About The Four So Far

There is still a great deal we do not know. No full plot details, character arcs or specific performances have been released beyond the official outline. Trailers and more extensive marketing are still months away.

What is clear is the scale of the production and the deliberate casting. Whether the finished film lands with the same force as her recent titles is a question only December will answer.

For now, the announcement itself is the news. Funke Akindele is bringing another original story to cinemas, with a strong ensemble and a clear emotional premise. Nigerian audiences who have followed her theatrical run will be paying attention when the lights go down on 11 December.
