Russian boxer dies from brain injury after refusing trainer’s advise to quit fight

28-year-old boxer, Maxim Dadashev has died after suffering a brain injury in a fight.

The Russian Boxing Federation says Dadashev died “as a result of the injuries he sustained” in Saturday’s light-welterweight fight with Subriel Matias at the Theater at MGM National Harbour in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

Dadashev was hospitalised shortly after the fight, which was stopped by his corner following the 11th round after Dadashev had received too many blows to the head.

He was hospitalised with bleeding on the brain and underwent emergency surgery but failed to recover.

The Russian Boxing Federation says it has opened an investigation.

Secretary general Umar Kremlev suggested there was “some kind of violation”, adding in a statement:

“We lost Maxim Dadashev. He was our young prospect.

“We will fully support his family, including financially. We will complete the investigation into the circumstances surrounding this fight, we need to know the truth about what happened.

“This happens in any sport. I think some human factors intervened, there was some kind of violation.”
