Apple Unveils Affordable Apple Pencil with USB-C Charging

Apple has unveiled a more budget-friendly Apple Pencil that incorporates USB-C connectivity. This iPad accessory will be priced at $79 and features a handy sliding cap that unveils the USB-C port. It can also magnetically attach to the side of an iPad, including the 10th-generation model released by Apple last year.

While the reduced price point makes this Pencil more accessible, it’s worth noting that it lacks some of the advanced capabilities found in the first- and second-generation versions. Notably, it doesn’t support pressure sensitivity, wireless pairing and charging, or the double-tap feature for switching tools. Nevertheless, it still offers hover support when used with M2 models of the iPad Pro.

Previously, the first Apple Pencil used a protruding Lightning connector for charging, while the second-gen model featured wireless charging and was not compatible with the 10th-generation iPad from Apple’s 2022 lineup, leaving users of that iPad with limited choices for stylus options. This period has seen some confusion regarding iPad accessories.

The USB-C Apple Pencil is compatible with a range of iPads, including the third- to sixth-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro, the first- to fourth-generation 11-inch iPad Pro, the fourth- and fifth-generation iPad Air, the 10th-gen iPad, and the sixth-gen iPad Mini. This USB-C Apple Pencil will be available for purchase in early November.
