Following the copyright infringement win over his 2017 single ‘Shape of You’, British singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran has been awarded one million dollars.

Earlier this year, Ed Sheeran was cleared of any wrongdoing, and now a judge has ruled that he must be paid one million dollars to cover his legal fees.

Judge Antony Zacaroli wrote in his decision,

“The starting point is to identify the winners and losers in the action because the general rule is that the unsuccessful party pays the costs of the successful party.

There is no dispute as to this, Sheeran undoubtedly won and won on every substantial point.” the judge added.

Just so you know, the case had been going on since 2018 after Sami Chokri and Ross O’Donoghue sued Ed Sheeran for allegedly ripping off their 2015 song ‘Oh Why.’

The plaintiffs claimed Sheeran, along with co-writers copied particular lines and phrases from ‘Oh Why.’

However, the judge who acknowledged clear similarities between the songs determined the defendants neither deliberately nor subconsciously plagiarized ‘Oh Why’ when writing ‘Shape of You.’
