Injury Woes Hit Super Eagles as Victor Boniface and Wilfred Ndidi Ruled Out of AFCON 2023

Super Eagles and Bayer Leverkusen forward, Victor Boniface, will miss the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire due to a groin injury. The 23-year-old, who had a promising start at Bay Arena with 10 goals and seven assists, underwent a scan, revealing a six-week recovery period. Boniface has expressed his support for his teammates while undergoing treatment in Germany. Victor Boniface took to his official twitter account to express his displeasure with missing out on the AFCON 2023 due to an injury.

With his absence, the Nigerian team faces another setback after midfielder Wilfred Ndidi withdrew from the tournament due to a three-month muscle injury. Ndidi’s spot has been filled by Alhassan Yusuf from Royal Antwerp. The national team, eyeing its fourth title, is also awaiting the fitness assessment of Kelechi Iheanacho, who is dealing with an injury. The collective injuries pose a significant challenge for the Super Eagles as they gear up for AFCON 2024.

The Syli Nationale of Guinea secured a 2-0 victory against the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a friendly match held at the Bani Yas Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Monday.

Jose Peseiro, leading the team, started the game without star striker Victor Osimhen and first-choice goalkeeper Francis Uzoho. The Nigerian side conceded a goal as early as the 14th minute and faced a second setback in the 64th minute when Guinea doubled their lead.

Despite the alterations, Guinea maintained their lead, securing a confidence-boosting win in their final preparatory match for the AFCON competition. The Super Eagles are set to fly to Lagos on Tuesday as part of their preparations for the upcoming AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.
