LET’S TALK!! Is Oxlade Mid & Overhyped?

Oxlade, Fireboy, Joeboy, and the rest of the boys all came around the same time.

In the years that have followed that renaissance and the entry of a new generation of artists, Joeboy has done quite well, Fireboy has been incredible. Other guys like Omah Lay and Bella Shmurda have stunned us.

But Oxlade has always been that guy that you could never get why anyone’s even talking about him in the first place. He’s never in those conversations about who the next Wizkid is or anything like that.

He’s had a few hits (“Ojuju,” “Away”) but nothing electrifying. Nothing that tells us he’s gonna stand the test of time. He has released two EP’s and is still nowhere near guys like Omah Lay in terms of relevance.

This begs the question: what’s Oxlade all about? Okay, he got a good falsetto. Yeah, he can pitch like WandeCoal. What else? Anything?

Actually, while a few of his songs I find enjoyable, most of them are just average. And that’s not because he doesn’t have talent or anything, but because that’s just what he does. Then you start to wonder, why was he part of the new generation convo in the first place.

Everything he’s done since getting the Next Rated nod has been, at best, mid. At least, I and some other people think so. He’s done a couple of collabos that have not been bad (“Kolo,” “Non Living Thing”) but all he did on those songs was just sing a hook. Is that all he is? A chorus singer? Can he even make an album that’ll stick?

Oxlade doesn’t exactly make it easy for people to evaluate him, because he doesn’t even make hits consistently. Sometimes, it’s just like while everyone is busy doing things, he just doesn’t exist. It’s weird, to say the least.

But this may very well just mean that he is an average artist and there’s nothing special to him. Maybe just his voice. That sounds like the definition of “mid” to me. I think we may have overhyped Oxlade.

Well, up to y’all now.
