Marco Reus Announces Departure from Borussia Dortmund After 12 Seasons

In a heartfelt announcement, Marco Reus has revealed his departure from Borussia Dortmund at the culmination of this season, opting not to extend his contract.

“After spending 12 memorable years in this magnificent stadium, dedicating half of my life to this club, and experiencing numerous highs, the club and I have mutually agreed not to pursue a contract extension,” shared Reus in a video message to Borussia supporters.

Hailing from Dortmund and previously nurtured in the club’s youth system, Reus rejoined BVB from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2012, amassing 424 appearances for Die Schwarzgelben, with 168 goals and 128 assists.

“Marco is undoubtedly one of our club’s finest players,” affirmed CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke. “Born and bred in Dortmund, he spent a decade in our academy and a remarkable 12 years with the first team. His bond with Borussia Dortmund is exceptional. We extend our heartfelt wishes to Marco for his future endeavors and hope to welcome him back to Dortmund in various capacities post-retirement.”

The 34-year-old, who captained the team from 2018 until the start of the 2023/24 season, lifted the DFB Cup twice and earned the title of Germany’s Footballer of the Year in 2019.

Expressing gratitude, Reus added, “I am immensely proud and grateful for the opportunity to represent this club for so many years. Sharing this news first and foremost with our fans was crucial to me.”

In a subsequent statement on the club’s platform, the 48-time Germany international emphasized, “Though bidding farewell at season’s end will be emotional, I’m relieved that there’s now clarity, enabling us to focus entirely on the crucial upcoming matches. We have a significant objective ahead — reaching Wembley. Our collective aim is to bring the Champions League trophy back to Dortmund.”
