Newcastle United has issued an official statement in connection with the betting controversy involving Sandro Tonali during his tenure at AC Milan.
This confirmation was made by the Premier League club on their official website on October 18, 2023. According to the club, Sandro Tonali is currently the subject of an investigation by both the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and the Italian Football Federation.
“Newcastle United can confirm that Sandro Tonali is currently under investigation by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for alleged illegal betting activity. Sandro is actively cooperating with the investigation and will continue to collaborate with all relevant authorities. He, along with his family, will continue to receive full support from the club. However, due to the ongoing nature of this process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to provide further comments at this time.”
The midfielder may not face a lengthy suspension after admitting to placing bets on matches involving AC Milan during his time as a player in the Serie A club.
This admission adds complexity to the situation because he maintains that he did not wager on Milan matches during his playing career. If this claim is accepted, it is possible that Tonali will not be charged with match-fixing, as there would be no evidence to suggest he attempted to influence the outcome of a match.
