Niniola Makes Emotional Return to Music After Husband’s Death

There is something disorienting about returning to work when the person who helped shape that work is no longer beside you. The rooms look the same, the rhythms of preparation feel familiar, yet the absence sits inside every decision, every cue, every quiet moment before the lights come up.

Niniola Apata is stepping back into that space. On Tuesday she announced her new single, “Raining (O Du Mi),” set for release this Friday. Her words accompanying the announcement were spare and direct: “Some feelings are too deep for words. So I put them in a song.”

Niniola Announces ‘O Du Mi’ Months After Her Husband’s Death

This is her first major musical release since the death of her husband, Michael Ndika, on 19 May 2026. He was her husband of 13 years, her longtime manager, business partner, confidant and the person she has repeatedly described as the engine behind her career. The marriage had remained private; many only learned of it when she announced his passing.

The months since have been gradual. In July she appeared at her younger sister Teniola Apata’s listening party for the EP The Wellness Package, an evening where the sisters shared the stage and the kind of presence that needs little explanation. Earlier this month she returned to performance herself.

In a message shared around that appearance, she wrote that there are no words for a moment like this, yet she knew he would want her to keep singing, to keep showing up, and to keep sharing the gift they had always believed in. She described walking onstage with a full heart and his love with her every step of the way.

Niniola Announces New Music After Her Husband's Death

Michael Ndika Was Part of Niniola’s Music Career, Too

Michael Ndika was not only the man she came home to. He managed her career from the period around her debut single “Ibadi” in 2014, co-owned the label through which much of her work was released, and ran NaijaReview, the platform that focused on the Afro-house and African music spaces she helped define.

In tributes after his death, she called him the engine behind her career, the one who met her “raw” and insisted she would become a superstar, and the person who refused to let her step away from music when she considered it.

He was the first face she saw in the morning and the last at night.

Returning to music therefore means re-entering a professional world in which he held a central role. The schedules, the creative conversations, the logistics of releasing work once ran through a partnership that was both personal and practical.

What Niniola’s New Song Says About Returning After Loss

“O Du Mi” arrives inside that reality. No lyrics or production details have been publicly released yet, and Niniola has offered no further explanation beyond the sentence that framed the announcement.

What the song appears to hold, at least from her own description, is the portion of feeling that does not fit neatly into conversation or statement.

Continuing does not require the grief to have resolved. Showing up on stage or releasing new music does not announce that the absence has become manageable. It can simply be the decision to keep using the language she has always known best.

For an artist whose work was built alongside the person now missing, that language may be the only place left that still feels precise enough for what remains unspoken.

Music, in this moment, is not a declaration of recovery. It is the place where Niniola has chosen to put what ordinary words cannot carry.
