In his debut interview with Tottenham, newly-signed forward Timo Werner has quickly endeared himself to the fans. The 27-year-old, arriving on an initial loan from RB Leipzig until the season’s end, expressed his excitement about playing at the Spurs stadium and winning trophies for the team.
Werner, who only referred to Chelsea as his ‘old club’ in the interview shared on YouTube, conveyed his eagerness to have the support of Tottenham fans, highlighting the special feeling of making the stadium his new home. He reminisced about scoring against Spurs for both Chelsea and Leipzig, expressing his hope to deliver standout performances for Tottenham.
A fan, commenting on Werner’s reception, remarked, “Werner was mistreated by the Chelsea fans. So, hopefully, that gives him the fire to prove them all wrong.”
Having endured a challenging two-year stint at Chelsea, Werner aims to make his mark in the Premier League with Tottenham. Despite a prolific 2019/20 season at Leipzig, scoring 34 goals, he faced criticism at Chelsea for his goal-scoring record of 23 from 89 appearances, with only ten in the Premier League. Tottenham supporters are optimistic about Werner’s potential to showcase his speed and threat on the field, hoping for a positive impact both on and off the pitch.
Expressing his aspirations, Werner stated, “I hope that I can be the best player I can be here. The people who have followed me in the Premier League know that I can bring my speed, be a threat for opponents, and off the pitch, I can be a funny guy. I hope to arrive well in the team, and that they are happy with me and my personality.”
Reflecting on his return to England and Tottenham, Werner mentioned, “When I joined my old club [Chelsea], I said I wanted to be a winner and I wanted to win titles. In the end, we won the Champions League, so I think it shouldn’t be too bad to say that I’ve come here to also win titles and to win something.”
