Kenyan association takes kids off the streets using classical music

Nairobi Classics, a new Kenyan association, has brought the best musicians from around the world to the capital, Nairobi for a series of concerts.

The funds raised will be donated to “Ghetto Classics,”a music group based in the Korogocho slum, teaching classical music to children.

Pavel Timofeyevsky, a world-renowned Russian pianist, is in the country to perform a series of concerts in Nairobi.

On his first visit to Kenya, Timofeyevsky was keen to meet the youth.

A member of Ghetto classics, Eric, first became interested in music seven years ago, starting off as a singer and then as a saxophonist.

And for the first time in his life, he was able to play a duet with a great musician, a moment he will likely never forget.

Not only did the young musicians get the chance to jam with Timofeyevsky, they also went along to one of his concerts in the capital.

More than 5000 dollars has been raised so far, and with more international artistes expected in Nairobi’s this summer, it seems that Kenya’s classical music scene is here is to stay.
