Reintroduced gender equality bill passes second reading in Senate

The reintroduced Gender and Equal Opportunities (GEO) Bill has passed second reading in the Senate and is now set for public hearing.
The bill which seeks to promote the rights of women in the Nigerian society was reintroduced for its First Reading on June 15th, 2016, after a previous version was shot down in March.

The leadership of the Senate described the passage of the bill as a clear indication that the eighth Senate is a gender-friendly institution.

It was later referred to the Committee on Judiciary for further legislative action and is to be returned for its final passage in four weeks.
