Brazil Establishes “King Pele Day” to Honor Football Icon

Brazil has officially designated November 19th as “King Pele Day” to honor the legacy of the legendary football player Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pele. Considered by many as the greatest footballer of all time, Pele won three World Cups with the Brazilian national team and scored over 1,000 goals during his storied career.

The commemorative date coincides with the day in 1969 when Pele scored his 1,000th goal in a match for his boyhood club Santos at the iconic Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. The goal, which came from the penalty spot in a 2-1 win against Vasco da Gama, was briefly interrupted as supporters invaded the pitch to celebrate the achievement of “O Rei” (The King).

Pele dedicated his landmark goal to the “poor children of Brazil,” further cementing his status as a beloved figure not just in the world of football, but also in the hearts of the Brazilian people. The following year, Pele won the last of his three World Cups as part of the legendary 1970 Brazil team.

Pele passed away on December 29, 2022, at the age of 82, prompting a period of national mourning and global tributes to the sporting icon. The law establishing “King Pele Day” was promulgated by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, ensuring that Pele’s legacy will be honored and celebrated annually in his home country.

This official recognition of Pele’s immense contribution to the sport of football and his impact on Brazilian culture solidifies his status as a true national treasure and one of the greatest athletes of all time.
