Carl Ikeme retires from football

Carl Ikeme, Wolves and former Super Eagles goalkeeper who was diagnosed with acute leukemia in July 2017, has announced his retirement from football at the age of 32.

Ikeme said his decision to retire comes on medical advice after “a tough year and intense chemotherapy’’.

The England-born player, has been with the Molineux club for his whole career, making more than 200 appearances.

“I spoke with the doctor and he suggested I should retire, because of the toll the treatment has taken on my body,” Ikeme told the club website.

“My health is my main thing. I just want to be here for my children, family and friends. In the grand scheme of things, with your life in danger, it’s a minimum price I have to pay to spend the rest of my time with my family.

“I’m happy with what I’ve achieved.”

In a statement, Wolves chairman Jeff Shi praised the goalkeeper’s strength of character in “what has been a very challenging time for him”.

“Carl is more than just a player in our eyes – he is our brother and an important part of our family,”
