Spaniard Verdasco ousted Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 7-6, 6-3 to advance to the second round.
American qualifier Taylor Fritz cruised past Italian Simone Bolelli 6-4, 6-2 and will meet Spanish eighth seed, David Ferrer next.
