Meta Introduces AI Assistant Powered by New Llama 3 Model

Meta has unveiled a major update to its AI assistant platform, Meta AI, built with the new open-source Llama 3 large language model (LLM). The company claims it’s now the most intelligent free AI assistant available. Meta AI can help users with a variety of tasks, such as studying for tests, planning meals, and organizing outings. Essentially, it’s an AI chatbot.

Meta AI is now integrated across the company’s portfolio, including Instagram DMs, Messenger, Facebook feeds, and WhatsApp. It also has a dedicated web portal at meta.ai, which doesn’t require a company login for access, though it won’t generate images. Additionally, the recently launched Ray-Ban smart glasses work with the bot, and Quest headset integration is coming soon.

When it comes to image generation, Meta boasts improved speed and the ability to create images as you type. The assistant can also handle custom animated GIFs. Meta AI is expanding globally, rolling out in over a dozen countries outside the US, including Australia, Canada, Ghana, Jamaica, Pakistan, and Uganda. However, it is currently available only in English.

Regarding safety and reliability, Llama 3 was trained on an expanded data set and synthetic data to avoid sources containing high volumes of personal information. Meta also evaluated how the chatbot handles risky topics such as weapons and cyber attacks.

AI has become a significant focus for Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, alongside other projects, but the company still lags behind OpenAI and Google. With Meta’s Llama 2 receiving mixed reviews, the updated AI assistant may need to make a bigger impact to stand out in the competitive AI field.
