Minister denies violation of women in IDP camps

Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Jummai Alhassan, has refuted allegation of sex abuse at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs’) camps in Nigeria’s northeast.

Alhassan who was on a  fact finding mission to  Fufore camp in Adamawa State, said  findings from her visits to camps in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States showed that the allegation made by Civil Society Organisations was untrue.

The minister toured the major IDP camps in the North East as directed by President Muhammadu Buhari who insisted that the  allegation must be thoroughly investigated.

The minister who spoke to reporters shortly after meeting women at the Fufore camp in Adamawa state insisted that  the allegation was not true, stressing that she would soon put together a comprehensive report on findings and submit to the Presidency.

The minister had earlier paid a courtesy call on Governor Muhammadu Bindow at the Government House, Yola where she appealed for his intervention in regaining the Yola Women Development Centre released to the Federal Court of Appeal by the immediate past administration.

She said the centre was built with donations by women to serve as a training centre, but was given to the court of appeal, thereby depriving women of a valuable asset .

Bindow promised to look into the matter and assured the minister of his commitment to  empowering women.

The minister  held meetings with women groups in the state on Federal Government’s interest-free loan packages instituted to boost their businesses.

The minister also visited an orphanage in Yola before leaving Adamawa State for Taraba state,  where she was billed to visit an IDP camp in  Mutum-Biu town.
