BMW is electrifying its iconic sports sedan with the introduction of the all-new G90-generation M5. The new M5 pairs its familiar twin-turbocharged V-8 with an electric motor, delivering over 700 horsepower to all four wheels.
Powerful Hybrid Engine
The G90 BMW M5 retains the twin-turbocharged V-8 engine, specifically the 4.4-liter S68 V-8 that debuted in the 2022 X7, replacing the previous S63 V-8. The gas engine alone produces 577 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, with peak torque available at just 1,800 rpm and a redline at 7,200 rpm.
Electric Motor Addition
BMW enhances this with a permanently excited synchronous electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission. The motor adds up to 194 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque, resulting in a combined output of 717 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque—on par with a Dodge Charger Hellcat but with even more torque.
Battery and Performance
The electric motor is powered by a 14.8-kWh battery pack mounted low in the floor for optimal weight distribution. This battery not only boosts performance but also allows the M5 to travel up to 25 miles on pure electricity. The system includes unique performance settings, such as a pre-gearing feature that increases the electric motor’s torque to 332 lb-ft at the transmission. A long pull on the left shift paddle activates Boost Control for enhanced performance between 20 and 90 mph. The M5 can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph but can reach 190 mph with the M Driver’s Package.
Inspired by Motorsports
This plug-in hybrid setup draws significantly from the technology used in the BMW M Hybrid V8 endurance racer, maintaining the M brand’s motorsports heritage in the EV era. The 2025 BMW M5 will debut globally at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, with production cars expected on the streets by the fourth quarter of this year.
