YouTube Expands Crackdown on Ad Blockers to Third-Party Apps

YouTube is tightening its grip on ad blockers, now extending its crackdown to include third-party apps. Mobile users employing ad-blocking applications may face performance issues or encounter an error message while watching YouTube videos.

In a recent announcement, YouTube warned users about potential buffering problems or the display of an error message stating, “The following content is not available on this app,” when using third-party ad-blocking apps on mobile devices. This escalation follows YouTube’s previous efforts, where it encouraged users to either enable advertisements during video playback or switch to YouTube Premium. Additionally, the platform began deactivating videos for users using ad-blocking extensions.

YouTube reiterates its policy against third-party apps disabling ads, citing the adverse impact on creators’ ability to earn from viewership. This directive primarily targets mobile ad blockers like AdGuard, which allows uninterrupted viewing of YouTube content within its application.

The platform emphasizes compliance with its API Services Terms of Service for third-party apps utilizing its API. Any violation of these terms will result in necessary measures to safeguard YouTube’s platform, creators, and audience.

To address the issue, YouTube promotes the ad-free experience of YouTube Premium as an alternative. While this may not be welcomed by users accustomed to ad-blocking apps, it underscores YouTube’s firm stance against ad blockers.
