YouTube Cancels Premium Subscriptions Purchased with VPNs

YouTube is canceling Premium subscriptions purchased using spoofed locations. If you used a virtual private network (VPN) to buy YouTube Premium in a cheaper country, your subscription might be at risk. Recently, several users who employed this method reported their subscriptions were automatically canceled, according to Android Police.

The tactic involves using a VPN to change your location to a country where YouTube Premium is less expensive. For instance, while YouTube Premium costs $13.99 per month in the US, it only costs $1.05 per month in Argentina. However, it appears YouTube is now targeting subscribers who misuse this trick.

YouTube spokesperson Paul Pennington told The Verge that the company has systems to detect users’ actual locations. “In cases where the signup country doesn’t match where the user is accessing YouTube, we’re asking members to update their billing information to their current country of residence,” Pennington explained. He didn’t confirm if YouTube has begun automatically canceling these subscriptions.

Following YouTube’s recent actions against ad blockers, it’s not surprising to see the platform also addressing the issue of cheaper Premium subscriptions.
