Elon Musk’s xAI Aims to Build a Powerful Supercomputer Using Nvidia Chips

Elon Musk, recognized for his ambitious ventures, aims to build a supercomputer through his company, xAI. The billionaire anticipates the supercomputer to be operational by fall 2025, aiming to boost xAI’s operations. Musk has personally invested $750 million in xAI, and his company X has contributed $250 million in computing power. This investment coincides with xAI’s recent fundraising round of $6 billion, indicating the sustained enthusiasm for AI technology.

Musk plans to use a cluster of Nvidia’s H100 GPUs to power the supercomputer. These high-demand GPUs are critical for training large language models in the AI industry. Musk’s goal is to construct a “gigafactory of compute” that outstrips Meta’s cluster in size, reportedly by over four times.

Currently, xAI rents servers from Oracle, equipped with around 16,000 Nvidia chips. xAI may partner with Oracle to build the supercomputer and potentially invest $10 billion in renting cloud servers from the company in the future.

While xAI has ambitious goals, it’s important to consider that Microsoft and OpenAI‘s $100 billion Stargate supercomputer, currently under development, isn’t expected to be operational until 2028.

To support its growth and compete with rivals, xAI is actively hiring for various positions in San Francisco and London. Musk has highlighted xAI’s mission of understanding the universe and pursuing truth rigorously, irrespective of popularity or political correctness.
